Thursday Brain Teaser
"He was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. After losing his leg at age 18 to osteogenic sarcoma, the young athlete decided to run from coast to coast in order to raise money for cancer research. Beginning by dipping his artificial leg in the Atlantic Ocean at St. John's, Newfoundland on April 12, 1980, he aimed to dip it again in the Pacific Ocean at Vancouver, British Columbia. His pace was daunting, running an average of 42 km a day — the distance of a typical marathon. Celebrating this amazing humanitarian, there is a cancer-awareness marathon every September around the world."
You know what to do...HINT at this week's guest in the comment section. And if you have an extra minute, come over to the SNARK, where we poke fun at eccentricity.

Sure am looking forward to hints.
I did this run in school every year and I don't run and I consider him one of Canada's finest heroes.
I remember when he ran through my home town! Great pick Minka. But I'm not 'clever' enough to come up with a hint.

He has a very cool name - unisex I might add... My parents thought it was a cool name too.
Doug, patience huh?
Jenn, I absolutely agree. We were discussing osteogenic sarcoma at university two days ago and someone mentioned him. So I checked up on him and full- heartedly agree: one of Canada's finest!
Morgan, this might not help any of the other bloggers, but i am glad you put it up twice.
terry, well done! :)
I have no idea who he is but he's amazing.
Actually, TS that was a great hint. I'm halfway there.
I voted for him in the Greatest Canadian thingy. I'm a tad peeved he didn't win. Morgan did you get to see him with his unique hop-run? Sadly he never made it this far...physically but his Marathon of Hope lives on.
Minka, dear....That is very foxy of you to pick this outstanding hero, who passed away so very young..... Judy
Hi Monika :-)
like jenn, I think this man was a great hero at the time of his cross country runs and we still actively honour him here. all the kids in school go in the TF run every fall to raise money for cancer research.
nessa, I guess part of this weekly guessing is introducing us to people we might not necessarily know about. This one was a surprise to me to!
Doug, half way there...you'll get there. Both parts of the name can be found in this comment section.
Jenn, Marathon of Hope...even without finishing hope remains, pretty great accomplishment, I think.
J:D....I am a foxy, foxy lady :)
kyahgirl, there is always a marathon in September here as well and I am trying to figure out if it is anythignt o do with him!
TERRY FOX is the answer!
i fear i had to Google this guy -- i can't believe i didn't know the answer. that said, what an amazing and inspiring individual he was! such a beautiful brain teaser, lovely Penguin -- thanks for introducing me to someone who truly deserves to be remembered as a "Hero"! : ) xox
neva, this might be one of the very few times, when you have been stumped. I am glad you checked up on him though :)
