Trivia

That's right, we are back in business. A new year has started and I wanna be orgnazied for a major portion of January. So, without further ado, allow me to present to you our weekly trivia:

"A colorful figure in 20th-century Canadian radio journalism. For over 40 years he produced a daily radio series called "Let's Be Personal;" he gained a reputation for "telling it like it is" and became a familiar figure to millions of listeners. He is especially remembered for a broadcast he made praising the United States on June 5, 1973. The text of that broadcast has been widely circulated on the Internet, particularly after the air attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in September of 2001 and again in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina."

Any idea; the moise of a bell ringing in your ear? Head over to the comment section and HINT! at this week's guest. Simply throwing his name at me, won't be well received!

Happy guessing everybody and try to leave google out of it for as long as restraint has a grip on you :)

If you have an extra moment, give THE SNARK a visit where we look at resolutions in fur!

I'm going to need a hint or two which is funny. There can't be more than three or four Canadians who have given speeches praising the United States. I should know them all.

Is it Rush Limbaugh?

Doug, you seem distraught. Even yoru grammar and spellign is suffering. Peopel better come forward with hints, before you start jumping of the edge of your carpet!

Icy, we are looking for a Canadian. And it's not Celine Dion :)

This Canadian has no idea. Do I have to give back my maple leaf toque?

This is as Clair as I can be without creating a sin:

[snip] I can name to you 5,000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble.

Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake. [snip]

I think the beagle has been hitting the sauce. The answer is so ridiculously easy I'm concerned that the Dawg is seriously off his chow...
Hmm...

His comments gave the US laud

I confess I googled. My search doesn't help me. Clearly I was paying attention to radio journalism when I was kid.

I've read that speech, but I don't know the guy's name.

Happy New Year, Penguin!

I was decrying my ignorance until I read the comments above. I had to google so I won't hint.

Jenn, it's a tough call. But not just yet :)

Quilly, it is quite clear that you know this week's guest. Well done.

Terry, he did and you are right. Doug will get there eventually, he just needs time sometimes. Moves like a turtle in unclear water!

Jenn, clearly there are more important things in life, but this is quite an outspoken man that deserves a mentioning here and there and I hope you come back to check!

Diesel, Happy New Year...yeah the speech has resurfaced of late whenever America faces hard times, to remind other nations that they too carry responsibility.

nessa, wow...I believe this is the second time the the general comment section is stumped. Terry and Quilly so far lead teh pact and quilly has a great hint!

I am never afraid of showing my ignorance...however, I must confess that I have heard the speach many times...the name eludes me.
Wait, wait...Doug????? Something else must be occupying his brain.

m'kay... so i've learned something new today, too! i mean, i'm VERY familiar with the name, but less so with his actual works. seems like a sin to be so ignorant...

when "The Americans" (his commentary) was released as a record (like a CD, only vinyl-ier, for those of you too young to remember), it made it to #23 on the Billboard top 40, making this man, at the tender age of 73, the oldest living person to do so well on the record charts! (okay so I thought that was impressive). i also thought it was cool that all the proceeds from sales of that "speech" were donated to the Red Cross.

gotta say, it's nice to see someone's brain is functioning so well, little Penguin! apparently that long(ish) flight home didn't impact you nearly as much as i feared it would! ; )

moa, I think it is wise of us not to inquire as to what exactly it is that occupies Doug's brain. Could be a top hat!

snuppy, wow I did not know that...about him being 73 at the time. I knew about teh red cross proceeds though. Interesting man don't you think?!

Just wanted to stop by and wish you a joyful new year!

I had no idea. Even with hints. So I googled. Now I know the name, but still have no idea.

At 01:07, Blogger tsduff said...

Okay, all is out ...I was no more enlightened than anyone. It was only ridiculously easy after I gave up and googled. So, sorry sorry sorry - doug.

You say bell, I think pavlov. It's a conditioned response thing.

raghu...it is a good speech, it's not without fault though, I think. But that's for another day.

TLP, he's Canadian...which might explain his obscurity :)They got a lot of fog up there :)

terry, I think with this one you either know it or you don't know him at all.

birdwoman...who's teh dude that had chicken runnign after him...Konrad Lorenz...I think...imprinting. Two of psychologies most important discoveries. Right after phallic shaped symbols, of course :)

I did a double-take when I learned that Our Subject passed on in 1984. Who, then was this gentleman with the same name to whom I was listening on Montreal radio in 1994?. It was his eldest son.

quilly, I do enjoy guilt any given day....but there is no properties to your button, that I can copy, to have your button on my page. (none that I know, at least.)

amoeba, that's true. Father and son, I hear the son is trying radio journalism as well.

OMG I feel so bad for being late on this one. I've made multiple comments on later posts and didn't even see this one until today. Clearly I've been negligent and should wear a gord on my head to declair my sins.

It was very cool (for me) to see the CBC Radio logo! Ah, warm fuzzy feelings.
