"Born in New York, he came to San Francisco and ran a camera shop. His financial skills got him elected to the Board of Supervisors in 1977, becoming the first acknowledged gay city official. Known as the “Mayor of Castro Street,” he helped pass the city’s first gay rights ordinance. In 1978, he and Mayor George Moscone were shot and killed by an ex-cop and fellow board member."

You know the name you seek was not the one he was given at birth? When I discovered that tidbit, I wondered what his name had been -- and when I discovered THAT, I understood how he could be content was a white rabbit.
