I know I am late...it's still Thursday though!
"In 1949 he moved to Nashville, where he became a regular at the Grand Ole Opry. A dependence on pills and alcohol led to his death, at the age of 29, while he was on his way to perform. He was named after Hiram I of Tyre, but his name was misspelled as "Hiriam" on his birth certificate. His songs have been rerecorded by various artists and still act as an influential part of music today, having been covered in a range of pop, gospel, blues and rock styles. His son and grandson are both musicians."
You know what to do! For those of you with a memory span similar to mine: off to the comment section with you and HINT! at this week's special guest. Isn't he just a big piece of eye-candy?

There once was a man from Montgom'ry
Who wore his coat even when summery
With Ramblin Manin your show
It's good if you know
But don't look like you know about bummery.
Kaw Liga still waits for his chance.
A pine carving can't even dance
But he'll never surrender
His feelings, so tender.
'Cause wood's always up for romance.
"Hey, Good Lookin'"! i see ya finally got yer brain teasin' post, cookin'! (sorry, such a good song -- hard to resist)
Even when told by his idol, Roy Acuff: "you've got a million dollar voice, son, but a ten cent brain", this hard drinking performer didn't put down the bottle. sad on so many levels. imagine what he might have created, had he lived longer.
still, eleven #1 tunes (and many more that landed high on the charts) during his (very) short career beats a bubbling pot of Jambalaya -- just have to think a lot of folks were hankerin' to hear few more.
GRAND OLE POST today, dearest Pengin! and late? pshaw -- far as i can tell, you're right on time!
impressive limericks this week, Doug, if i didn't know better, i'd think you were a fan o' the man! ; )
Neva, it all goes back to my driftin' cowboy days of settin' the woods on fire.
Now "I'm So Lonesome
I Could Die"... as I'm a goin down the "Lost Highway"... you know "I Just Don't Like This Kind Of Living", so, "I Won't Be Home No More"
I grew up listening to this guy. My dad and step-mom often danced in the kitchen to his tunes. Though it was more like my step-mom danced and drug my dad around with her ...
This fella was a Super Star by the age of 25 and dead at age 29. Left his widow, Ms. Audrey, to raise his son. He also has a daughter, Jett, born just days after he died, but her momma isn't Ms. Audrey. Shame, shame.
Even more surprising -- in 1989 he had a hit record, "There's a Tear in My Beer," recorded 30 years after his death! (It was a dubbed recording on one of Jr.'s albums.)
My dad always said his music was the best example of country music.
I didn't have a clue,
But I wanted to get it right.
So, I went to Wikipedia,
And finally, "I Saw the Light."
Doug, I checked both songs and they are wonderful representatives of this man's genius :)
snuppy, you hit us with quite a few of his extraordinary ones. I remember years back when I heard "Hey Good Looking" and happily bobbing along outside the realm of beat, I asked who that was singing...
Doug, is that why California only has imported palms?
Terry, yep, yep and yeppiyep. There are so many, aren't there?!
Quilly, that is a very nice image. When I find my guy, I hope there will be dances in teh kitchen, and when he sings "Hey good lookin'!" he only sees me. Selfish I know!
goldennib, I find it hard to disagree. Although I am sure that is entirely up to taste and devotion. No question, his contribution at that young age stand out though!
Theresa, Thank goodness you live in Europe. I am told if you don't know this one, the American government might consider exporting you...very likely to Spain :)
I still remember his greatest hits on 8-track, as owned by my grandparents Hank and Margaret Williams. (Seriously, those were their names!)
Strangely I've never developed a taste for country music (or road-kill burgers or grits or drinking the whole bottle of whiskey.)
Aye, Minka. But the fingers are indigenous.
Yes, thank goodness I live in Europe. ;) In my defence, he was a bit before my time and I was never a country music fan, so I had heard of him, but I didn't recognize him. And I couldn't have thought of a single one of his songs without cheating.
Morgan, the last part of your sentence came as a surprise :)
Doug, opposable thumbs and all?
Theresa, I hereby declare you mentally stable :)
Death at age 29.
So sad.
I need a HANKie to wipe my tears.
Have a good day, Minka!!!
Opposable...thumbs?
Jamie, please don't cry a river, the word is drowning as it is :)
Doug, when you flip somebody off...two fingers away...don't worry about it though.
Well, I grew up in Memphis listenin' to The Grand Ole Opry, so this was easy. I listened to it 'cause my folks listened, but I never learned to like much of it. But this guy was good, for that type of thing.
Country??? I am hunky tonk STUMPED!!!
Is it ok to just pop in to say, "Hi"... " I miss you"... and "GET A NEW POST UP ALREADY!"???
Bohemian minds would like to know! ;-P
Yup...I knew that picture immediately. Didn't even have to read further. I verify Morgan's comment. My brother has the same name. My Dad was always asked, "Can you sing?". The western music of this sad soul and his contemporaries was always on the "hi-fi". I prefer the new country to the old western songs. Good Memories........Judy
TLP, I kinda knew you'd know. I am not being against or anything, it is just that some little bird whispered into my ear, that you didn't live far away :)
MIz B...you set the trends around here. So it is perfectly fine, to come along, wish me a wonderful day and encourage me to post.
JD...OH, I believed Morgan, some things you just can't make up :)
I got the Rabbit Rabbit blues/ Right down to the soles of my shoes.
Hey, Rabbit, Rabbit!
Such a fun Habit!
Thought I'd hop by
to tell you all hellooooooo!
and, yes, it does work with the tune for "Good Lookin'". and, yes, i, too, think it a tad... pathetic. d'oh! ; )
Rabbity Rabbity
Me thinks you didn't believe that I never drink the whole bottle though. :-P Let's say... never again!
Rabbit, rabbit!!!
Doug, than dance your oddities away, my friend!
neva, I hope you have a beuatiful October as well. I use "hey, good looking!" as my morning greeting to myself upon encoutnering the mirror in teh morning. Soemtimes I sing, it's a treat for teh eyes and the ears, lemme tell ye!
