Thursday comes with Trivia...

"He sold his first story when he was thirteen, which earned him enough money to buy a second-hand typewriter. His first novel, a humorous fantasy, appeared in 1971. Working for many years as a journalist and press officer, he wrote in his spare time and published a number of novels in between. In 1987 he turned to writing full time, and has not looked back since.
Regarded as one of the most significant contemporary English-language satirists, he has won numerous literary awards, was named an Officer of the British Empire “for services to literature” in 1998, and has received four honorary doctorates from the Universities of Warwick, Portsmouth, Bath, and Bristol. His acclaimed novels have sold 40 million copies worldwide and have been translated into 33 languages."

When a good nurse, not evil nurse Ratchet,
Throws a softball, she means you to catch it
If Minka's got an itch
To toast her novelist
I suppose we should all prob'ly scratch it.

Minka, I know, I know. The author in question is how I arrived at your blog. I followed the common interest and ended up here. :-)

J.D. I'll explain the elephants and turtle later.

J.d. well done! Flat earth *giggles*

Morgan, I remember. and Last night I thought it was time to have a TRivia about he, that unites so many. One of these days I´ll go to one of his conventions. And Morgan, I think your Mom knows what we are hinting about :)

Theresa: that was impressive, my wee wee hag ;)

Minka, you make a mule feel so inadequate. Why? Because you keep stumping me with your %$##@ thursday teasers!

At 12:04, Blogger Minka said...

Old Mule, there is no excuse....if you want to have the pleasure next Mrach, to engage in a conversation with me...you absolutely must know something about this writer. In return, I´ll brush up on how often is it appropriate to change one´s profile picture in a week and soemthing about boats, I feel :)

oy -- it's clear to me i need to start reading this man's books, if only to give us MORE to talk about! any author who says: "I'd rather be a climbing ape than a falling angel." is someone i KNOW i'd like!

GREAT Thursday Teaser, dearest Penguin! xox

Doug: that may have been one of your best limericks yet! ; )

neva, oh I just know you´ll love him. But I say that to everyone, because I can´t look past my own dedication to this man´s writing.
And I agree on Doug´s limerick, I feel it´s about me and everything about me is bound to be great :)

with a little sleuthing, I have the answer! But I will not utter it here, for fear of grand reprisal. But I will have to give this bald fellow a read.

And yes, I have lots of work to do before the Ides of March.

I have no idea. This requires thinking and as I have migraine hangover...I don't care to think. I'm with Mule on these (censored) teasers.

He's a very interesting and odd person. I love when he dons his black chapeau.

Is this guy usually guilty of sci-fi fantasy? I don't want to do a hatchett job on him, but though I try, I can't read his stories.

the old mule...there are many bold guys. This is one of them ,yes! And go ahead...read one of his books. It won´t kill you, I promise. It might have you in stitches though ;)

Jenna, I have had some decent teasers through the year...most of them American centered, I´ll try better next time. Although I love the picture of the witch dancing on the table, probably along to a song about a hedgehog, ahhh Nanny!

goldennib, that narrows it down, for sure! LOL

Hi Minka, I'm guessing your favorite fellow who we discussed at one time in March. Based on your recommendation I now have a book waiting in "Mount To-Be Read".

Tell the Old mule not to worry, I didn't get it either but just had a lucky guess due to our previous reading related meme some months ago.
:-)

40 million + readers and I have not been one of them.....clearly my education is lacking. I should not tarry as it needs to be patched up.....as well as my grammar it seems.

At 00:36, Blogger Minka said...

Birdwoman, you snuck by me :) And you are right, hatchett or not. I encourage my friends to try and read him...but I totally accept that it is not for everybody. It is hard to get into him though and particulary if you start with the wrong book. There a at least 5 Discworld novels I wonæt ever read again ;)

kyahgirl...yes I might have discusse dhim here before and mentioned him way back in March, I´d be surprised if I have not :)

Móa, well done! I am sure soem of teh characters in his novels would make excellent inspirations for a creative person like you ;)

Oh! I have a hint! A couple posts ago, Actonbell wrote about an anthology of four of his novels!

At 09:53, Blogger Mother Theresa said...

Aye, twas nae easy tae comment like that, ye ken, but for my favorite author... By the by, I found a countrywoman of yours though The Rising Blogger. She was talking about a penis mall...Is there really a penis mall in Iceland? Well, I'd better offski now...

At 10:40, Blogger Minka said...

actonbell, in your defense...I made very sure that in my hints there was no connection to the facts about him everybody knows.

Doug, yes she did. I was there, too and enjoyed it immensely!

Theresa, yes there is. I´ll e-mail you the from above picture once I find it. The newest shopping mall in Iceland (Smaralind) is shaped like a penis when you look from above. The inside is decorated with what I can only describe as serm motives ; Somebody was trying to have a sense of humor!

I have not read any of his books so you'd better get to recommending a good place to start.
