I kid you not!

Welcome to Smaralind. "It is the biggest shopping mall in Iceland with over seventy shops, restaurants and services. It contains everything from a cinema and pharmacy to an alcohol shop, candy stores and restaurants. Smáralind was opened in October 10, 2001 at 10:10 GMT." It´s a nice enough mall, about 10 minutes from my place and with decent ventilation. Nothing really wrong with it, except maybe when looked from above:

From a different perspective it seems someone was trying very hard *giggles* to have a sense of humor. I mean the plans were approved by a board of quite a few people...someone must have noticed!

Better start wondering what attracts me so frequently to it. I seriously hope it is not a Freudian complex of phallic dimensions.

*this one goes to Theresa, for reminding me in what an...er... open-minded place I live ;)

p.s...feel free to click the images to -for want of a better word- enlarge them.

this just in:

I think it's easy to guess what was on the architect 's mind when designing this place. They must have laughed all the way to the bank.

hmmm...I don't know quite what to say. A dozen different jokes are rushing through my mind but I shall refrain. How, pray tell, did you make this discovery Penguin?

Very funny. I didn't click to enlarge them...I don't need comparisons to something that can be spotted from the air! LOL

Jd...take a breath in between

Doug, you think they have a big basement underneath?

Joel, this is Iceland! It took teh nation, oh about a day....by October 11th eveyone that has e-mail, had a picture of teh mall from a top view, and the rest were introduced to it at the ice water cooler ;) theresa asked me again about it yesterday, so i decided to do a post about it! See, how it comes all together?

em, fair enough. Although it seems this image must have escaped quite a few. I seriously hope this will not become Icelands mark in the world...like the Eiffel-tower in Paris! Oh my!

LOL! so you don't say 'Go to hell!' but 'Let's go to the penis!' when you wish for icecream. :)

Oh dear, I'm responsable for this pornopost. After the penis joke at my place, hot sex at the Snark and this, people will have sex on the brain for the entire weekend. When I heard about it I thought it was hilarious - Iceland must truly be a land with no hangups.

If we had a mall like that here, I'd love to go shopping.

At 16:58, Anonymous Anonymous said...

HAHAHA! i'm DYING laughing! that said, the design of that mall doesn't surprise me in the least, i mean, it makes sense, considering you live in the only country in the World (that i know of) with THIS MUSEUM.

too funny, little Penguin. bet there's a nice Victoria's Secret somewhere in there, too! ; ) xox

Minka...after seeing the "Museum" that Neva showed us, your Island has NO HOPE of being remembered for it's beautiful landscape and beautiful people. The Mall and the Museum have labelled you "The Sexual Anatomy Capitol of the World". You'll be in the top ten tourist attractions. Congratulations, Iceland.....Judy

Beginning to think you live in a den of iniquity.

ariel, pretty much and it is a punishment I can accept;)

theresa, yes you are to blame. I think it was a brilliant idea though and a nice idea for a post. If in 9 months, we experience somewhat of a babyboom, I´ll take responsibilty :)

goldennib, my favourite store is in teh head of this particular building, I guess next time I am there, I´ll blush!

neva, Husavik is a special place! ;) Few live there, strangeness is teh norm!

J.d: see that´s what we are afraid of. I shouldn´t have posted this, sexually deprived women everywhere will mecca to Iceland from now on...guys will come and tehre will be peeing contests outsid eour mall...I can see it now. People, remember it is really cold here, bad weather and nothing but shark meat to eat!

Joel, it´s a wonder I turned out to be the healthy, life-affirming person I am...isn´t it?!

I had
Baejarins Bestu there just a month ago.

At 23:07, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I knew this, but have never seen it so clearly. Thanks, my dear. And now we need a picture of the floor design. Mom

At 23:28, Blogger Minka said...

Móa, that would have made for strong, fully packed, metaphor. Unfortunately it is only possible to have Baejarins beztu at one place in reykjavik, which is downtown, at a tiny hot-dog stand. I know Smaraling makes great hotdogs though :) Eina med öllu?

Mom, what ye doin´tomorrow after lunch...we could go and look for those white, wriggly little worms decorating the interior...it´s a date?

Wow, I lived a month just across the street (centre left of the pic) for Nov-Dec 2001 and I had no idea (1) it was *that* new and (2) you know.

At 12:50, Blogger Minka said...

well, well, well...Morgan!
As Icleand stretches more and more to accomodate its growing population, the nation felt we should have a second mall...which was erected (continuous giggles) in 2001. You actually lived about 8 minutes from me...that´s just weird.

At 14:53, Blogger ~Mo'a~ said...

They have a Baejarins Bestu stand in Hagkaup...I did not have time to go to The Stand downtown :) So the strong fully packed medaphor lives.

At 16:47, Blogger Minka said...

I have to research that better, but I checked Wikepedia on this too...and there is only one listed, how can there be two "City´s best"? Unless, the one downtown decided to multiply its one stall into a chain, which absolutely could be the case, just that someone must have forgotten to send me the notice letter.

At 16:58, Blogger Minka said...

I stand corrected:

Baejarins beztu!

"A small hot-dog stand, located near the harbour in the heart of Reykjavík, where you can get the best hot dog you will ever find. There are three Bæjarins beztu hot-dog stands in the capital area, one is located in Tryggvagata in the center of Reykjavík, another located in Skeifan and the third in one Smáralind shopping mall."

thank you Moa!

Hi liebe Monika!

It looks very erect and sturdy. :-)

Good god. What will the aliens think when they finally come.

That is hilarious. "Epic proportions"
comes to mind.

Well, there'll be no babyboom at this house, that I can tell you. So, has the birthrate risen over there since this was built? Maybe it's a government scheme or something. They should build one over here, because they say the Spanish birthrate is one of the lowest in Europe...I've already done my part, so I'm off the hook. The floor design is very fitting, but it seems very few want to step on the squiggly part...Maybe it's a subconscious fear. So, There's a hot dog stand in there? How appropriate, do they have a frozen banana stand too?

At 11:55, Blogger Minka said...

Kerstin...alles im lack hier. Bin auf dem weg nack deutschland anfang Juli, und dann nach Amerika.
Ansonsten alles beim alten. Schön dich hier zu sehen!

Mom, I remember there were white sperm cells decoratively strewn on the wall. Couldn´t find them yesterday!

jamie, to brave these weather conditions it has to be :) I mean we all know what cold does to those private parts...

Old Mule...penis envy is a big problem here in Iceland :)

Theresa, the birth rate is high here...we start early and don´t limit ourselves to one donor. makes for a lot of variety :)

I think Spain is still after italy, those mama-boys simply don´t multiply at all!

I had to wait a while before I could capture a picture where few people were on the little wriggly worm, so I could show you it´s shape!

bananas that get here, always are frozen, to keep them from going bad before they arrive :) We also have a fien selection of cucumbers, carrots and some baked goods that will do :)

I did not know about the Baejarins Bestu at Skeifan.....but the real experience is going to the original one...unless one is looking for a metaphor :) Now, what does that floor decoration look like to you?

Oh my! A lot of questions about why I am the way I am have been answered because of THAT very picture! Dios mio!

... and having said that, ha, ha, ha, ha,haaaa! An erotic mall! My kinda place to shop FO SHO! ;-P

And the interior pic had me teary eyed... it reminded me of many childhood trip back home to Denmark... very similar malls! Thanks for the pics and a faboo update to Icelandic quirks and eccentricities oh queenly amiga of mine!

PS- Yes, I accidentally logged in with my real name, but worry not, it was deleted ASAP and I am back as Miz B! Phew! I almost crapped my pants!

Minka - ha ha! My sweetie's auntie lives across the street from the penis mall, and we have had many a laugh over its particular shape as we looked out the window over looking the place. We also toured the penis museum in Husavik - actually the owner is quite a character, and has been collecting his specimens for a great many years, even getting his family and grandchildren in on the act with art (all tastefully done - this is not a pornographic display in any way). It was part of the culture and outside-thinking of Island that captivates my heart. We pulled into the airport at Keflavik on our journey home via Amsterdam on Sunday, and I was so sad to only glimpse the moss covered lava fields, the stark cliffs toward Reykjavik and Esja in the distance. BTW - we had not one, but two aborted take-offs as we careened down the runway... both times it was due to a generator failure. The pilot apologised, and the third time was a charm after waiting 3 hours for the replacement generator. *sigh*... almost got to stay longer.

Moa, i would have to say like a wriggly worm:) I am maintaining my chidish innocence with force :) It could also be a crysalis ;)

Doug, no that´s cheap sexual education is what that is :)

Cindra, I had to google Johnson :) Not too familiar with the metaphorical vernacular of reproductive organs in your language :)

Miz B....I am fortunate enough to know your beautiful real name, and you are quirky because of many things, Icelandic heritage doesn´t speed teh process of normal along ;)

Terry, I know...this country has something quite special. It is so beuatiful now, it is a bit warmer and teh grass and mosses are starting to show...the BBQ smell in teh air and teh laughter of children in teh distance. WE have been wiating for summer so long!

well, i have to say the inside of this mall looks lovely. very clean and inviting -- which is, of course, a sure way to get folks to come again and again and again. heh heh.

d'oh! (sorry, i couldn't resist) *slaps hand over mouth*

; ) xox

At 13:11, Blogger Minka said...

Miz B. working on it. It is summer, penguins are outside studying physical relations of the earth´s movement! Ok, I lied...
