It was Thursday yesterday....

"He was born in Greece in the early half of the 1st century A.D. He studied in Athens and taught in Rome. Best known for his Parallel Lives and biographical studies of famous Romans and Greeks (Julius Caesar and Cicero) he also composed many essays on religion and philosophy."

You know what to do: Hint in the comment section at this week´s special guest.

For those of you that do not have a major in philosphy or history and rather do numbers:

Complete the equation by filling in the five missing numbers with 4, 5, 6, 8, and 9.

Each number may be used only once:

( _ + _ - _ ) X _ divided by _ = 1

Go nuts!

Since I don't feel like doing math today I'll take a shot at your mystery man.

I believe he one said, The whole life of man is but a point of time; let us enjoy it." (Seems like a reasonable attitude)

There is also a crater on the moon that shares his name.

Unless I'm misunderstanding something, I've found no less than 10 answers to the math quiz... But then again I guess you didn't say there was only a single correct answer :P

apparently i'm not the only person who thinks this is one difficult brain teaser. whew! ; ) xox

Minka, thanks for the math problem! It was fun to do and made me feel better about not knowing the history of ancient philosophers.

Happy Thurs-Fri-almost-Saturday!

Awhile back I studied for a big Western Civ test and this guy was on it. I think his name sounds kind of like one of our planets in the solar system that was recently demoted to a non planet.

I refuse to do ANY more math than the hideous math I am doing in college. Math is of the Devil and should not be attempted during free time.

Have a nice weekend! :)

neva, it is a wonderful feeling, isn´t it?

theresa, absolutely correct. Well done and welcome to this weekly game!

daedalus2u, very similar to mine and it works fine. *claps*

neva, I am not sure. At leats I ma not familiar with it, which doesn´t mean a whole lot. I will get to the bottom of this though!

bjössi? you still alive? well, there are a few answers to this math quiz, I have found a few myself, but my enthusism for numers just gets me this far...so i actually don´t know the exact amount of possibilities. I thought one answer would be boring, since more than one would like to give this a try! :) Nice seeing ye!

neva, I think it is easy...since people are coming up with answers and more than one. Maybe you really should have some coffee! *grins*

Morgan, see I knew someone would get a kick out of this! happy weekend!

Jamie, I couldn´t agree more. But you see, we have to allow for nerds to joins this wonderful world of my blog as well :)

Doug, nice limericking and have a shot at another option for teh math quiz, you know between conferencing-it is not like you are enraptured with it according to yoru blog!

Old mule, that took me a while...and some research, but well done!

More than one answer?!?! I got what daedalus did, so didn't try further.

How about...

... nope. Maybe it's because it is now Saturday morning, but I only know the one answer.

(5+6-9)*4/8=1

I hope (6+5-9)*4/8=1 isn't considered the other option. What's the answer?

and, of course, there's that similarity to the name of a dog, belonging to a certain famous Mouse (who's "home" you recently visited)!

as for the other part of this brain teaser -- i threw myself off by trying to work with some aspect of "9" -- what with it being a magic number and all! ; )

xox

At 23:45, Blogger Minka said...

snay, I don´t get it!

Morgan, that would be another variant in my mind. I never said it was a big one!

neva, too true! Although we sorta skipped that part of Disneyland. It would have killed some of the company :)

Oh man, Snay just made a Highlander reference and I got it, I am so blowing my non-geek cover.
:P
He's been pretty well hinted but I knew, I knew :p
and I thought 3 was the magic number?

At 04:48, Blogger Malnurtured Snay said...

Logo, you dork! ;)

At 05:19, Blogger Minka said...

Logo, three is always a good number ;)

snay, apparently you rock. I researched highlander for some relation to this week´s special guest, but no luck so far. I will figure it out! Please tell me, you donæt like Star Trek, please!

At 14:04, Blogger Malnurtured Snay said...

I found your link on Jamie Dawn's blog and decided to follow it home. I'm glad I did, as your site is an absolute and unique delight.

Because I'm flying to China later this week, my brain's decided to take a rest. I'll chime into your next brain teaser...promise!

I look forward to reading more of your work, and hope you'll pop by my blog as well.

All the best,

Um.

Minka, did it ever occur to you that I might WANT you to come over here?

(This would be a good time to confirm that you're single ... if not, forget I implied anything...)

Just popped in again.

Hello.

Math still sucks! :)

At 19:02, Blogger Minka said...

Snay, I am attached ... to my sanity! :)

Jamie Dawn, and it will until we say our goodbyes to the metric system and start to believe in words again!

Better late than never. After this feeble attempt, you may wish "never"..........I was late because I was eating a PLATE of cheeri OHs. (Gads, you may not know that Cheeri-o is a breakfast cereal.....It's even more feeble if it has to be explained. The only thing worse would be to be feeble and wrong:-)........J.D.

At 18:21, Blogger Minka said...

Jd...we have Cheerios here too, even the Honey Nut variety ;) I likes it a lot!

At 18:22, Blogger Minka said...

Oh Bugger...

and the answer was:

Plutarch

anyone know if Kevin applies?

At 03:45, Anonymous Anonymous said...

yeah -- Kevin Plutarch. that's exactly who i thought it was, too! whew. ; )

remind me to explain the "magical" qualities of the number 9 to you sometime -- it's fascinating-yet-boring, and part of a lecture i'm sure you won't want to miss! (this was a GREAT brain-teaser, by the way!) xox
