A tender embrace...

I seriously hope that nobody finds this morbid, but while running on a treadmill on the 5th of February I saw this image on the telly flashing by. I didn´t have my headphones on (I lost my 4th pair in 2 months now!), so I didn´t really knew what was happening where, but the image put a smile on my face and evoked a warm fuzzy feeling within.

Thanks to Google I know a little more now:

"Archaeologists have unearthed two skeletons from the Neolithic period locked in a tender embrace and buried outside Mantua, just 25 miles south of Verona, the romantic city where Shakespeare set the star-crossed tale of Romeo and Juliet.

Buried between 5,000 to 6,000 years ago, the prehistoric lovers are believed to have been a man and a woman and are thought to have died young, as their teeth were found intact, said Elena Menotti, the archaeologist who led the dig."

Well, what with February having started and it being the month of love and everything, I felt it only appropriate to post this. Eternal love, ey? Who would have thought it was anything but a hopeful concept...and then archeology shoves this in your face!

One of these days I am gonna get me some of that!

"Beware the Ides of February!"

addendum:

Happy Birthday, MOM! You are turning 59 today...sorry, it just came out before I could stop myself :) And although you can drive me nuts, quite easily...not a day goes by that I don´t remember how wonderful you are.

Now; I know I can be difficult at times, mouthy most days and cynical every hour...and although I pretend to be annoyed when you pass on your advice, my ears still listen.

10 years we have been together now and I know that the person I am, has a lot of you in her. Thank you, ´cause frankly...together we rock.

See you in the morning!

No, not morbid. But I can imagine a dozen ways in which this couple would have wound up like this. None of which I would like to have visited upon me or mine.

Richard Armour, in a 1957(!) parody of Romeo and Juliet called Twisted Tales From Shakespeare, wrote that, when the play started, R&J were callow and green. At the end, they were noble, dignified, and dead.

Hmmm ... ;)

I figured it must be like that.

Oh guys...It´s February for crying out loud. We can be miserable and cynical all the rest of the year...well, except on my birthday and Christmas and ... ah, why bother?! Go ahead, be murky!

Oc, actually it is assumed that the guy was killed somehow and the woman sacrificed afterwards so he would not have to pass on alone. I donæt know how they can tell that sorta stuff, but I am sure it involves a fossil brush :)

I saw this too.

I found it very interesting.

Hmmm ... went looking for those data but didn't find them. Sati goes back aways ...

And as for the curmudgeonliness? I do have my tender spots, I guess. And I'll thank you to keep your pointy-toed boots right away from them, thanks. :P

Nice - wonder what they'd have thought if they knew they would be exposed eons later for all to gawk at... :-)

Oh, and happy birthday to your MOM. All moms deserve bday hugs, honor and recognition on their special day. Wonderful post Minka.

I blogged on the same images as I found them beautiful. I'm sure there is some normal boring explanation, but I just don't want to hear it. Who would you like to spend eternity with?

And happy birthday mum!

Minka, I suppose you're going to tell us 10 years ago you were nothing but reason and logic.

Happy birthday to your mom (in case what I just wrote on her blog turns out to mean "I'm wearing your suede hoopskirt" or something.)

snavy, I know...there is something catchy about it, no question!

Oc, I guess both of you are an excellent version of what you are :)
And I always kne wyou had your soft spots, you have been my garden statue for quite a bit:) now excuse my while I go off and polish my boots, got them 50 % off at a sale. Impressive aren´t they? LOL

Terry, eon later indeed. 5000 years...hey we could be related to them. Checked your family tree of late?

trundling grunt, hmmm...interesting questions...I have to ponder on that for a bit. Do you know who?

Douglas, interesting. But I do think I always had my heart pounding quite strongly in my chest...she just knew how to open it up somehow. You did just fine on her blog, too! ;) Thank you!

Happy Birthday, Minke's Mom! (She has the same birthday as my stepdaughter, Aved Princess Leia Pez, who just turned 20.)

Happy Birhday to your momma, Minka!

As to those star-crossed lovers, romantics may make a lovely story of their deaths, but dead is sill dead. No only that, if the young man died first, and the young woman was his mate, she may not have been given the choice of whether or not she wanted to join him in that grave. Those words, until death do us part in the modern day marriage ceremony, have much more cultural significance than the people speaking them may know.

AP3, ok that is a bit of an age difference. Congratulations with what I am sure is another amazing Pez :)

Quilly, that´s why I would never say those. I can hardly vouche for tomorrow :)

I loved that image when I first saw it. Very appropriate for February. Very human.

Happy Birthday Minka's Mom.

I thank for your kind wishes! And, believe me, every new year gets better than the last one! Where will it end?
Till death do us part...is that not a christian idea? Do you really think that 5000 years ago humans where as strange as they are now? Please, DO believe in love and when I open my eyes after eternity the first being I will see is you
Mom

goldennib, me too...that is why I haunted google to find out what it was all about!

Mom, I´ll try:) And I sure hope your afterlife greets you with a better sight than mine, I don´t mind being 2ond or third in line :)
I see you had a lovely birthday...from 15-23 and nobody cleaned the table! *shakes head*

At least dear Monika, I hope that you will live longer than me, but say hallo when we meet! I will be very grateful, after the eternity, to see you smile.

I saw this photo a few days ago....the image is lovelier than what one imagines lead to the eternal embrace. Think of Njals Brenna.
Happy Birthday Biene. I love the photo of you, very elegant. Svo Glaesileg.

Mom, we´ll rock that spiritual plain like it hasnæt rocked before.

Fred, thank you!

Móa, we donæt know what happened yet. I am hopeful! And I agree, she is a very foxy lady!

Mom, you deserve most of the praise you get, and apart from teh cigarette in your hand (which reeks of sophistication) I have to admit that you are very elegant indeed!

Minka, that was a lovely entry for your mom! Happy birthday mom!

I also enjoyed your romantic ideas about the lovers embraced for eternity... until I read the comments where doubters started voicing themselves. Oh well.

One advantage of being single... we've got more friends than married stiffs!

p.s. It's really about the way they're facing each other, like the moment before a gentle kiss. *blush*

p.p.s. Oh geez, I've gotta get out more!!!

Morgan, well, last time I did go out, I was hugely dissapointed...but that is no reason to give up, now is it?!
At least, when old and surrounded by y many birds, I at least know I tried :)
Thanks for you wishes for my mom´s birthday!

Happy Birthday to your Mom! She is gorgeous in that After Five cocktail dress. I just wish she didn't smoke. None of my business but since I'm a cancer survivor, I just have that urge to mention it. Sorry. The post was quite interesting. I'm headed to Google News to read more.
Happy Valentine's Day.

Oh yes, me and my sigaretts... I stopped last year for three months, but I wasn´t any happier, but thanks anyhow.

Minka, I like that pic, not too morbid, just morbid enough.

Minka: they're a lovely little couple. They look so vulnerable laid bare like that though, I feel the urge to put a blanket over them.

Happy Birthday to Mom! Hope it was extra special.

What a great valentine day find...I really loved that pic of the fossil people in an embrace.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE MOM!

awww... this is a charming picture, and i'm sure it is in NO WAY offensive to your dear mom to see these ancient bones being used as a means for commemorating her birthday. i mean, next to these two, we ALL look young, right?

actually, i find this top picture sadly sweet. as for the one of your mom? BEAUTIFUL! especially because i know what a wonderful woman she is -- and how much she means to you! soooooo sorry i got to this party late -- hopefully i'm not too late to add my own Happy Birthday Greetings to the mix!

lovelovelove this post -- and your "unique" way of expressing your love, sweet Penguin! xox

swampy, just as she is entitled to smoke, we are entitled to our opinion about smoking. She knows we hate it...but in her defense I have to say that this woman has so few vices that her smoking makes her more human in an odd way. :)

actonbell, there is something about headphones. I bought a really good pair last, regardless they still screech in my eaar whenever I run. It is like an electric shock transmitted every meter or so...I donæt know what they try to condition me for, but I am not gonna submit! And thank you!

Mom, smoke away...I´ll buy a lighter any day!

Logo, my kinda girl!

g, well they were found in Italy, it never really gets cold there ;)But a blanket seems a wonderful idea, they seriosuly need to get a room those two ;) Let´s give them some privacy :)

Cindra, see...I thought it would make a good Valentine´s greeting :)

Neva, the party hardly ever starts before you arrive, now that you have...*hands out paper hats and cake*...

Tom and ICY...well, maybe they needed some bones to gnaw ;)
