Thursday Brain Teaser

She hails from an athletic family and although she loved football and softball, decided to take up tennis. Sports Illustrated named her “Sportsman of the Year” in 1972. During her career she won 20 Wimbledon titles, but her most famous match came in 1973, when she beat Bobby Riggs in a tennis match at the “Battle of the Sexes” at the Houston Astrodome. The crowd watching was the largest to ever view a tennis match.

Ok, I realize most of you are going to be busy watching TV and stuffing yourself and the last thing you want to do is activate those braincells for thought...but just in case there is one or two of you that need to at least engage in mental exercise a bit: Go to the comment section and HINT!!! at the right answer to today´s quiz!

and these made me chuckle:

What did the mother turkey say to her disobedient children?
If your father could see you now, he'd turn over in his gravy!

Why did the turkey cross the road?
It was the chicken's day off.

Why can't you take a turkey to church?
Because they use such FOWL language

Happy Thanksgiving you guys. Remember that gluttony is a patriotic duty today: may the Gravy be with you!

First post??? Wow, being in a similar timezone to the poster really helps! :)

Okay, a hint. Over the past Brain Teasers there have been a lot of royalty featured. But this particular monarch of tennis has her title backwards from her gender.

*sigh* No one is around in the blogosphere these days! I feel so lonely... it's what happens when we are in the European minority and were in the US anyway, no turkey, gobble, gobble for me thank you very much (vegetarian and all you see!)...

Have a good day my European sistah! Just popping in to send you some besos!

Morgan, sort of depends on how you define gender, doesn't it?

It's of great wars that history sings
When maps change and cold steel rings.
The Battle she fought
May yet be forgot.
It was won ere she first took up strings.

Oh, and Minka. I LOVE the cartoon. Happy Thursday and may the richest gravy be yours.

Morgan, you ar eteh first commenter, not teh first post. That would be me, I take ranking very seriously ;) And yes, you are correct! Well done!

Miz B. I know...the blogoverse is forlorn, is what it is! I think there is nothing more I want right now, than to be somewhere in the States, firmly cushioned on a sofa, watching parades, while the smell of food being prepared gently plays with my nose. We really have gotten the short end of the stick, haven´t we?

Douglas, you are American, right? Isn´t there an apron and a turkey ready to be stuffed, calling your name? And yes, as usual, you are right :)

First commenter! (And first poster since my blog went up 45 minutes before yours.) I take ranking (who's on top) very seriously!!! :-P

Not on my territory, sweetheart, no you don´t!

Happy thanksgiving, Minka! Perhaps, if you were here, I would have cooked -- turkey TV dinners since my oven is broken. Alas.

Did you know that Elton John wrote, Philadelphia Freedom in her honor?

Unfortunately, I am so old that I saw this match (on TV) and boy/girl was it a big deal.

Beautiful blog.

Happy Thursady. Come see my attack hand turkey, Charlie.

Happy Thanksgiving, Monika! Or, is it Thor's Birthday?

Anywho, if she were a guy, the last of her three names might instead have been Queen.

At 14:18, Blogger I Dive At Night said...

Sweetheart?!? Hey, being cheeky to the penguin gets you promoted. *blush* (It's a bit deal 'cause around here she's the Queen!) *bow* Morgan

At 14:47, Blogger Minka said...

Quilly, no I didn´t, but I checked and you are right! And quilly, there is always next year ;) An invitation a month in advance and Icelanari shall bring me straight to you...just some fodder for thought :)

goldennib, now looksie...the butterfly has entered my kingdom. I am truly honoured. Welcome!

Al, it would have been more sense in it, but the world has trouble following a thread on the best of its days. Happy thanksgiving, Al...hope you´ll have a lovely time!

Morgan, sense the tone ;)

I see the penguin is back in rare form!!! Speaking of girl vs. boy, I think MInka wins everytime. You will be happy to know that we had SNOW here a couple of nights ago. Nothing on the ground, but cold and nasty.

As for your hint.

It's silly
being green
can't sing.

What I remember most of that era, is the ruffled tennis knickers all the women wore.

We won't stuff our faces until this afternoon. All vegetarian fare.

Her first and middle name were also the title of one of Michael Jackson's greatest hits.

At 16:05, Blogger Doug The Una said...

Man, Joel. Remember when we used to wonder about that paternity suit? Not much point going to appeal, is there?

At 16:07, Blogger Minka said...

Brian, Correct and Happy turkey-less Thanksgiving to you and Diane!

Joel, that is the hint that first popped into my head "....... is not my lover!"

At 17:29, Blogger Kyahgirl said...

Hi 'sweetheart'
*gently elbows in between Morgan and Minka*

how's my favorite misplaced penguin?

I remember all the hoopla around that match and still hear bits and pieces of news about the 'queen' of tennis and her efforts against sexism.

I have the same middle name as her, although no one call me by it except my sister. There's an obscure clue for you :-)

Charles Schultz once did a tribute to your mystery woman in Peanuts, when the character Peppermint Patty said to Marcie, "Has anyone ever told you that when you're mad, you look just like "Monika's Thursday Brain Teaser"?" (okay, i had to substitute the name -- i mean, i *do* know the rules around here!)

great brain teaser, beautiful Penguin... Happy Thursday to you.

yep, Doug, most of us figured that the MJ paternity suit was a joke, even back then! pretty sure we didn't need a catchy song in order to be convinced. poor MJ.

At 18:47, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Pretty sure MJ's paternity suit was filed by MJ himself.

At 00:19, Blogger Minka said...

Kyah, Hi there sweetie! *waves*
Since I don´t know your middle name I have no chanc eof knowing, but I know how scientific you are and who am I to argue with that?

neva, of ocurse you know the rules, you have played by them from the get go :) peanuts are just awesome.

joel...MJ is for Michael Jackson? Oh now I get it...I swear it took me ages to swallow that bit. But teh three of you were talking, excuse me while I continue hosting aorund here:)

At 00:38, Blogger I Dive At Night said...

Minka, the tone... is it love? Total acceptance? Or was I making someone in Iceland angry? >:-P

At 00:53, Blogger Minka said...

morgan, it takes a lot to make me angry, if I were lightnign would have struck you down by now. Don´t worry :) All in good fun!

At 14:05, Blogger The amoeba said...

Careful there, morgan. Being cheeky to the penguin might get you promoted. It might also get you planted in her garden (or is it her garage?) as a purple-painted terra cotta statue with spaghetti hair, and frozen flowers everywhere. (And she combed that hair once. Ye-ick. At least I didn't have to do it.)

:)

With her first name, she might have been confused with our 42nd president - what passes for royalty around here. But she misspelled it. Ah, the standards of American education ...

At 14:06, Blogger The amoeba said...

Oh, and Quill? TV turkey on turkey day?!? Don't make me go over there ...!!

At 16:45, Blogger Kyahgirl said...

well dear penguin, another way to look at is, now you know what my middle name is because pretty positive about your teaser. Although I won't spill the beans, even if you threaten me with a Billy club.

At 18:02, Blogger I Dive At Night said...

Ciao Minka et al! I'm off on vacation and likely offline for a few weeks.

One last hint. According to Michael Jackson, this same name was not his lover. She's just a girl, who claimed that he was the one.

Catch you when I surface.

OC -- how aboput I give my dinner away all together?

Minka -- you are losing control of your male subjects.

At 01:28, Blogger Minka said...

Oc, stop whining you love my floral treatment:) And your hint wa sgood and correct. Why am I not surprised, Mr. Know it all?!

Kyah, I promise I won´t tell *sends a collective e-mail to everybody on her blogroll*

Morgan, let teh waves hit you and say hello to a turtle if you see one :)

Quilly, it is tough, I know. But I rule here and they will learn *gives instruction for a new room in the lower areas of the castle*

I remember all the hoopla around this famous match....I think the first issue Ms. Magazine came out around the same time.
All the good clues have been used.....I was too busy stuffing a Turkey, pealing, chopping and stirring, to be in time to give a good clue. And a good time was had by all.

At 05:29, Blogger Minka said...

Móa I am glad to hear it. I expected few to show up to begin with, but am surprised so many people ar estill able to lift their bodies onto teh next chair, press teh turn on button and guide their fingers over the keypad. Not properly stuffed is what I am thinking!

At 14:04, Blogger Doug The Una said...

Hey, you switched Fritz' quote for Edna's. I think this one illustrates you better.

I can think of a GREAT hint at the answer, but it's rated X, so I'll pass.

Know who Heidelinde Weis is? She's featured in BASIP today...
