Akureyri

The second of two cities in Iceland was the destination of four girls this weekend. Your hostess included. Now Iceland can be rumoured to be somewhat cold in winter, a city in the North of this coutnry will take the icing on the cake. Boy, it was cold! But four girls, packed into a Nissan Micra, driving 6 hours through mountain ranges, will keep warm somehow.

It was a fantastic weekend. Sight-seeing, dancing, singing, playing of cards and laughter. Crowded bathrooms, borrowing each other´s clothes and braiding each others´ hair featured heavily. From Friday evening to Sunday we slept little, laughed a lot and drank enough beer to make any Viking proud.

Yesterday we drove back to town, in a blizzard that had each family member worried.
4 cell phones in the car, a blizzard on the horizon and every Mom, Dad or boyfriend calling to make sure everything was alright, it shouldn´t be a surprise that ring tones were an important part of my dreams tonight. After we drove for an hour we really wish we hadn´t. The roads were barely visible, the wind was so pushy that when you got out of the car you couldn´t stand and I did mention the Nissan Micra, right?!

On one particularly steepy and icy part we lost control of the car and gently slid to the edge of the road with nothing but dark abyss staring right back at us. The girl that was driving said in a very calm voice: "We are going down, girls!" And we accepted it, hugged the seat infront and thought of the people that mattered. Nobody screamed, nobody breathed...but as you have realized by now...I am writing this post, so we did make it (everybody breathe now!) for some reason, and believe you me: physics was not involved, the car stopped and we got the control back, looked at each other and laughed. A common reaction after shock.

Despite it all, it was so worth it and the weekend with all its movements will be remembered fondly by all of us that took part in it.
Asa, Anna Margret, Thordis and Palina: thanks for a rocky, funky and cool weekend!

You are quite the thrill seeker although based on the pictures it does look like it was all worthwhile...amazing countryside you have there in the land of ice. Glad you made it back in one piece to tell the tale!!! And, it was a good one at that. Happy Monday.

Joel

*believe I may be first.

You all look like you were ready for the weather....What?...only one blond in the group?
Akureyri is warmer than the south coast in the summer, that is a good time to go North.
I love your photos.....is that Myvatn? If it is at least you did not have to suffer the Myfluga.... :)

Tuborg and Carlsburg eh? Ah, nothing like a weekend out. And with the near-death experience there really is nothing like it!

Glad you made it through!

That was such a great post and such wonderful pictures I can't bring myself to be a smartass. Although if I could, I would probably say "You know you can't park, why would you try at 80 in a storm?"

Sometimes it's good you don't do atoms, right?

Really a wonderful story, and I'm thankful you and your camera got home safe and sound from adventuring. You should submit the picture by the waterfall to the Iceland Visitors Bureau. Other than the stone wall, I'm having trouble deciding which formations were made by people and which by nature.

wonderful story and pictures, I LOVED everyhting.

well, that sounds misunderstandable. I meant that sounded like a weekend is worth recalling for cheer and joy despite of the frightening going down.

I forgot to say that I am so happy that all is well.....do you have your winter spikes on yet?
I looked at the photo that Doug was talking about....and I would vote for that caption if Sar had this photo in a contest :)....so I looked at a close up of the photo and I saw tiny Huldufolk talking about you :) Cute pose.

Okay, glad you made it through.

And next time you have four girls packed in to a Micra, let me tag along!

Quite the adventure, dearest Monika! and boy am i glad you came out of it in fine and typically funny form (by "funny" i mean with your wonderful sense of humor intact!).

your pictures are absolutely fabulous! and, i think Doug's right, the one of you by that magical waterfall has "Visit Iceland, It's Hotter than You Think" written all over it. (seriously, i believe that one needs to be framed and sent to one or two of your -- *ahem* -- fans... if you catch my drift, and i'm sure you do!)

the last time my car did a gentle "slide" down an icy hill, i slammed into a snow plow. needless to say, it's quite a helpless feeling (the sliding *and* the slamming). thank goodness you all survived to tell your stories! and why do i have the feeling you girls are already trying to figure out when and where you'll go on your *next* road trip? xox

Joel, and did you notice that in the land of ice, none of the pictures had snow on them??? just pointing it out!

Móa, we are two honest brunettes and teh rest is colour coded ;) And yes, the pictures are from Myvatn area! Well done!

Morgan, so do I and Mom and Dad are pretty thrilled too. WE were in phone contact all teh time and had a rescue dude drivign behind us, we were in pretty good hands!

Doug, wow...no smarta** remark upon my near death experience??? And I coutned on you...well, you tried at least! And I can´t park, how did you know?

ariel, it is ok to love everything. the thrills of life are always part of it!

Thank god we put the nail tires on, otherwise this post might never have been published ;)

old mule, I´ll coutn you in. That should be fun!

What a fabulous adventure! A near death experience, too! and beer. Sounds like the perfect time. LOL I am seriously glad all of you are alright. That must've been quite a fright. Great pics! D :)

(((Minka)))

I know that feeling well, of sliding gently. Very happy you are all ok and had a great weekend.

Any pics of you?

At 23:08, Blogger Doug The Una said...

Minka, you know I wouldn't be a smart aleck about a threat to you. I just hope you guys didn't hold up too many cars behind you.

At 23:11, Blogger Minka said...

Ásgeir, how the f*** do you know what I had at Greifinn? Are you stalking me?

FF, it sure was...I am glad I am safe and sound, but i could walk outside and slip, hit my head on the curve and die. In the grand sceme of things life is a challenge everyday...sometimes you just ask for it ;)

At 23:12, Blogger Minka said...

Doug, I can´t wait for the day I´ll be able to lay my hands around your neck and tightly squeeze...only for a bit though!

At 23:14, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wow! Terrific tale and great pictures, Minka! I'm very glad things didn't turn out for the worse. Phew!

(On the other hand, I'd have been first at Waking Ambrose today...)

New York sure isn't as pretty as Iceland, but its a whole lot safer, no?

At 23:35, Blogger Minka said...

Brian, almost all of them, fetaure me, except the ones without people :)

al, nah...you wouldn´t be that lucky. The first spot is mine and you have to put up quite a fight. In the blue corner we have the Ice Queen, try to survive her glacial stare!

At 23:36, Blogger Doug The Una said...

Minka, cutting off the oxygen to my brain will probably be a disappointment for you.

At 23:50, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Al, have you never walked down an icy sidewalk in NYC? in UGGS? and had your feet fly out from under you? and landed flat on your back and hit your head? and had cabbies yell out their windows "hey, lady, are you okay?" no? me neither. but i've heard about such things, and it sounds, well, painful. very very painful. not to mention embarrassing.

At 00:19, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes to everything, Neva, except the UGGS. And, instead of "Hey Lady...", I'm pretty sure I heard, somewhere within all the laughter, something like "Stoopid Bastid."

By the way, if New York ever gets the Olympics, what you wrote sounds like it'd be a great event.

cya tomorrow, Minka, bright and early, no lame excuses, like "I fell into a gorge." :-)

Doug, I don´t expect much change, to be honest :)

Neva, I can´t wait to go! :)

Al, you ar eon, but don´t come crying to me...! I have competitiveness for breakfast!

cindra, funny and silly...I think you hit the nail on the head!

Mom, I know you do. But I mad eit home and hugged you, so you know I am alright!

At 12:06, Blogger I Dive At Night said...

Monika, I've been enjoying the pictures. In the first one there's a beautiful young woman in a sexy pose on rocks. I found that one mesmerizing, fascinating, an artistic masterpiece!

Later I noticed the waterfall too.

At 12:14, Blogger Minka said...

Morgan, yeah...she was just lying there, crazy lady. If ever I go back to Godafoss, I will tell her your regards! :)

At 12:22, Blogger I Dive At Night said...

Yes please. Ask her if she wants to go scuba diving in Bonaire next week. It's all really last minute, so I don't have a buddy. :-O

At 13:16, Blogger Doug The Una said...

Minka, I thought that lady looked familiar. Lorelei, right? When did she move to Iceland?

At 13:50, Blogger Minka said...

Morgan, I have a feelign that she made plans for lying around next weekend :)

Doug, she came with the elves adn lepracorns from Ireland in 2003 I believe.

sounds like a fun weekend Minka. even the blizzard...blizzards make great memories, as long as you don't go into the abyss at the side of the road :-)

glad it turned out ok.

Logo, glad the tribe is not blowing out my fire. We know it represents life ;)

swampy, I couldnæt not share. You guys are my friends too, you know!

kyah, hi sweetie *waves frantically* I guess the general consensus is that we are glad I made it, pheu: what a load off ;)

You're going to have so many good and unique memories! Well, the experience with the abyss was scary, but it's now something to tell. The pictures are just wonderful, too.

Thank you, also, for your kind words. I do hope for a change in our political tide.

I am glad you are ok!!!

We have been having crazy weather here... there has been flooding (we got caught in a little one but our car is dead as a result!)... and much chaos!

I love the pictures! So beautiful! And more than anything, I love all the glimpses of you that I can get my hands on pretty lady!

Miz B. look who is talking, you foxy thing!

snav, I am lucky I guess...free as a bird..well osrt of :)!

ásgeir, what are you doing over there. The fatc that you know I had bernaise steak at Greifinn still puzzles me. I know you were born in Akureyri and have relatives and friend sthere, but neither of them has seen me...it is odd and my German accent is not that recognizable. When you get back, we´ll have to sit down and talk about this!

keijut,hey...Stokkseyri is a little area on teh south coast of Iceland. It is close Eyrabakki. I donæt know any particular horse breeders around that area, but i probably could find out. Let me know!

At 22:59, Blogger Minka said...

keijut...Stokkseyri is the village called, it is not teh neame of teh breeder. Icelandic horses always get the name of village, stable name or City street in tehir name, so we know where they are from. I will find teh breeders in Stokkseyri and just give me the first name of your horse and I should have no trouble doing so. I am going south on Friday to see teh opening of a new swimming pool for horses and that is the best plac eto gather information!

What no pictures of the blizzard? What kind of a photo post is this?! Just kidding, I'm very glad to hear my sistah had a wonderful time bonding with the ladies and survived mother nature's wrath in the process.

One question, who dared gag the Ice Princess in the first picture?
