A bit late Thursday Brain Teaser...
I am sorry ok??? It just happened, I woke up in this dumpster in Gjkayfoiaffjödur without money or ID and no idea how I got there in the first place. Ok...that was a lie!
I really had an ID, but the photo was too shabby, so I didn´t wanted to show it to anybody :)
I really need some sleep...
anywho:
"Long before there were awards for it, her first recording, “Down-Hearted Blues” sold almost 800,000 copies. She played in the black vaudeville circuit, recorded with Louis Armstrong, and was nicknamed “Empress of the Blues.” Her strong, unsentimental style has influenced Mahalia Jackson and Janis Joplin among others. During one of her performances, she chased a group of Ku Klux Klansmen away from the show. The highest paid, and most popular blues singer of her time, she was killed in a car accident in 1937."
You know what to do. Leave a HINT! in the comment section. Do NOT answer! If you do, I´ll buy you a one-way ticket to Gjkayfoiaffjödur and we´ll see how long it´ll take you to get back from there! :)

There's no one up there above me? How'd that happen?
Fred, becuase I published about two minutes ago ;) Now are you guessing or not???
I would have to cheat on this one. And, as a teacher, we know that's not a good thing.
I didn't know the answer, so I have to come clean. It stumped me.
It's 12:40 am there. Go to bed!
Well I imagine it's the one and only...
Her life was anything but what her name depicted.
She always performed with a white flower in her hair.
By the way - now you're talking my kind of royalty.
Fred, i would...but if you view my last comment section in the post below, people get teasty when I dissapear. I am scared. I checked teh windows and locks twice now...I canæt close my eyes for fear I will wake up with a head over my sleeping body yelling at me: where is your post! It is scary stuff, let me tell you!
:)
I know that dumpster. Nice dumpster.
Just a guess, but...
Lady Day sang smooth like a Queen
But she learned from the empress of steam
God Blessed the Child
Then let her run Wild
After Ma put some froth in her cream.
Lady Day is not the hint.
Oh and welcome back. Now take a shower will ya! Climbing out of a dumpster like that.
It's not!? Then I'm confused.
G, it has nothign to do with vacation ;)
Doug, nope..not it either.
Can´t believe I got you guys this time.
Okay now I have to redirect my thinking cap. Let's see if another hint comes in...
There was a lady who sang the blues
I'm hear to give you some of the clues
She was born in Chattanooga
I won't try to fool 'ya
Is this enough for the clues?
I know it, Minka, I just had a long drive home after realizing the right answer. In my defense, that picture wasn't there before. Disregard previous limerick, substitute this one:
Now Divas don't have to endure men.
The can charm, tan, anneal or cure men;
Apply various forces
to fit them for horses,
They're all smiths in English or German.
this is an EXCELLENT Brain Teaser, miss Penguin... and well worth the wait!
unfortunately, most of the really good Blues clues have already been given out. this is what happens when you pick someone who died before her time (and on a "comeback trail", no less). still, was it a car accident that killed her? or segregation? no one knows for sure, tho' playwright Edward Albee may have come close.
happy to see you, young lady! you've been MISSED!! and well done with this week's teaser! xox
I cannot recall her name but saw a film of her once, she was singing with Luis Armstrong, I tell you, that woman must have been a hard ride to anyone!
Yes, you HAVE been missed even though you are ignoring bohemians and not even answering her comments but is she complaining, did she even notice? Oh no!
*sniff*
Forget getting out of Gjkayfoiaffjödur! Pronouncing it is hard enough! Dios mio!
As for the brain teaser, I would participate if I had a brain to tease but alas, none today!
G, well they are coming right now!
Swampy, well I guess you got it first. Well done!
Doug, there you go. I knew you could do it! And might I just add...well done with the limerick. You know me well indeed!
neva, yes she is back. She still has to make her rounds, but after another 8 hour shift! I have to check a few of your details, but I think your hinting is excellent as always. Thank you for the lovely words, always amazing to hear such things at 7.30 in this household!
ariel, she might just have been. Morning Ariel, you are up early!
Miz B. this here Penguin is devastated that life and limited hours per day have kept her from chatting with the most amazing Bohemian she knows. Amendments will be made! If ot helps, your commetn salways bring a smile to my face and they are never ignored! I mis syou too and please stop sniffing...you are making my eyes all puffy!
I give up. I can guess the last name from Doug's comment.
TLP, well, then youa re half way there ;)
Brian, have a lovely weekend and my bets to Diane!
OOOOOHHHHHH... I did a paper on this soulful/blues magical voice back in college....
The biggest thing for me is that she met and was discoved by Ma Rainey... I would have died and gone to heaven to have met Ma Rainey... My favorite of Ma Rainey's is "Walking Blues"... have you heard it??? If not... you got toooo....
That's right, Shayna, and Ma Rainey died about the same time and also recorded with Louis Armstrong which is why I was confused.
And I think you're right about the movie, too, Ariel. I think I've seen that as well. Sunny Side of The Street, right?
Shayna, yes she did. Well done! Doug was hinting at Ma Rainey first. Glad your brain was teased in teh rigth direction ;)
Doug, did I make you supervisor? LOL
I'll have to check back for the answer, or it'll drive me nuts--I thought I knew who it was until that last line about the car accident. I'm still stumped. (The singer we all thought of first died of liver problems, poor dear).
It's good to see you back!
I just stopped by to say HI. I am up and about for the time being.
I can see her, hear her - but her name??? escapes me. Blast. D
I googled the song name. But if I got the right answer someone who KNOWS would have mentioned a certain cow my now, I think.
Lucy... you beat me to the cow punch by thismuch. xox
This has nothing to do with your post. I was watching the show, "Passport to Europe" last evening and Reykjavik was featured. I learned about the Icelandic horses (purebred), geysers (Strokkur - The churn)
blue lagoon (wow!)
gullfoss (Golden Falls)
Have you been to the places? The horses looked magnificent. Were they for the Vikings?
I want to visit your beautiful country.
I have an online friend who got me hooked on vocal jazz and blues, and I have a very favorite song by her.
Do I know this one?
"Tain't Nobody's Business If I Do"
(She may not be the only one who did it, but she did it up right)
Ha, Minka. Sorry. I got chatty. It happens. :)
OH NO! Don't have puffy eyes! I won't sniff anymore I swear! I jsut missed you is all! A more fabulous Ice Queen simply could not be found!
Okay, I finally googled the answer, and that's not BS.
Good one, Minka! HOpe you're having a fun weekend.
can't believe I missed this one, what with me supposed to be this jazz/blues player. but I don't sing it, Louis, I play it ...
what's with all the limericks here? I don't think our topic chanteuse was exactly what them meant by Black Irishmen ...
Gjkayfoiaff..fff...fff... C'mon. Is that the Icelandic equivalent of Upper East Overshoe? Or Frostbite Falls? Or is it something that Tolkien dreamed up but cut from the Lord of the Rings because it wasn't sufficiently obscure?
How do you people manage to say anything in that miserable language without tripping all over yourselves and cracking up laughing? Especially you. Wasn't German already tough enough?
:)
Happy Sunday Minka!
I won't submit any clues, since I had to Google through a bunch of BS also to be sure. But I must say, I too spent my night sleeping in a dumpster! Ah, it's incredible to be home and partying!!! I crawled into a dumpster last night to sleep and woke up at home in my bed.
On second thought, that dumpster might have been a taxi...
actonbell, 1937 the car accident was.
FF, up and about is always good. Hope you feel well and happy :)
TLP, cow you say???? LOL
Neva, what is it with all those barnyard animals? :)
swampy, have I seen those places?
Blue lagoon-check
geysir-check, about 7 times
Gullfoss-check, about 7 times (it is one trip really)
horse *she smiles*
come here and I promise you I´ll show all these things to you in a day and we still would make it to dinner!
Logo, I have to check on that. Are her initials BS?
Douglas, Douglas, Douglas....there are no words!
MIZ B, that was so sweet. I wish a day had more hours so I could be as attentive to everyone and everythigna s I like. I miss you too. A more fabulous bohemian-unimaginable!
actonbell, it was a tough one ey?! I just did it, ´cause last time I got the ..."this is way too easy"- comment
Oc, Doug started with all the limericks (don´t ask me why!), but I ahve coem to look forward to them each week now. Wanna give it a shot, it is more fun than you think. Challenge extended!
Morgan, For the record: I did not wake up in a dumpster somewhere. The place name is also made up! I was just trying to be funny...I stand corrected!
and teh answer to our Thursday trivia (on Monday!) is of course:
*drum rolls*
Bessie Smith
I'm checking out travel plans as soon I we return home from this trip. Please don't desert (sp?) me while I'm gone.
swampy...impossible!
