A belated HNT and Thursday Brain Teaser

I know. So tempting. You just wanna bite into those delicious formations. Yummy!

Thursday Brain Teaser:

In 1729, she was born in what is now Poland. Sixteen years later she married the heir to the Russian throne, and got the chance to rule when he was overthrown. Her reign saw the first school for girls open, as well as a medical college. After a peasant revolt she became conservative and sent those who opposed her to prison. She had numerous lovers who served as unofficial advisors.

If you think you got it, go to the comment section and hint at the rigth answer. That way you show your knowledge, leave clues for others and I won´t hunt and punish you for just simply blurting things out!

Suddenly, I lost my appetite for carrots.

Your person has a number in her name that's less than 10. She also had her picture on a ruble.

At 00:53, Blogger Fred said...

And, was I first?

At 00:57, Blogger Minka said...

Fred, I believe you are first and are also right.
Well done!

I'm a world history teacher. This one was easy. :)

At 01:24, Blogger tsduff said...

Those carrots look so demure... but oh so fresh! I'm not much of a history buff - so I'll have to wait for more clues. Monika, you are so learned!

it was rumored that her "official favorite" lover (a former adjutant general) would hand pick "boy toys" for this woman with the Great sexual appetite, often selecting the most virile men from within the Royal Horse Guard. This lusty queen did NOT, however, die after attempting to have sex with an *actual* horse. (contrary to rumor).

what can i say? my sister wrote a book that includes some interesting bits of trivia, including this one.

The Scarlet Empress was a film made in 1934 about this fabulous ruler, and starred the very beautiful/sexy/intriguing East German actress, Marlene Dietrich.

I love that picture. :) that is just fantastic!!

At 05:50, Blogger Alana said...

Clueless...seriosly. I have no idea and won't even attempt to be pretentious and come up with an answer. Looking forward to reading it though!!

At 10:57, Blogger Minka said...

Fred, I knew you were a history teacher, nevertheless you have stumble don one or two of my trivia. I feel this is a good place for you to continue your education she says ever so proudly :)

terry, smart move...it is all about teh right time and teh right place.

neva, excellent. You get a crown for fabulous hinting today!

cj, thank you I laughed a lot when I saw that.

Brian, come again?

Square, it is takes a hero to admit ignorance. *bows*

Now that's how you get a boy to eat his vegetables.

I think I know this. The first syllable of her name says "meow" and the last syllable of her legend was "neigh."

At 11:26, Blogger Minka said...

Doug, well done. Good hinting. But Neva still gets the crown, sorry ...I know how much you wnated it! :)

Brian, don´t worry it is my reception that is broken. I exchanged the antenna...and we are good to communicate!

Hi Minka,

I know this one! *waves hand franticaly*

"Let them eat borscht"

Yes! Dewy exclaims! Who the best? Dewy's the best!

Like Winston Churchill before me, Minka, I'm happy to be remembered as the great commoner. Although the blogosphere may survive 1000 years they will still say that this was my finest hour.

There was a lady named _____the Great.
Whose husband was not Henry the Eighth.
She ascended the throne.
On a horse of her own.
And this last line is difficult to make. (rhyme)

"She ascended the throne
On a horse of her own."

I LOVE poetry!

At 13:45, Blogger Minka said...

Brian, I saw you comment, you are always too sweet. But thanks for indulging in my little oddities :)

Dewy, I don´t get it. Your round assets might be distracting that half of my brain that is still functioning :)

Doug, you are so humble. If we could only bottle up your charm, we could cork it shut!

swampwitch, welcome! First timers are always well received. I havenæt heard this rhyme before, but googled and well done! Thank you for playing!

ariel, don´t we all? Especially when it makes sense and they give us good clues.

At 13:55, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Minka!

You mean the person you are talking about is not Marie Antionette??? I thought for sure I had this one. Rats!

Though I just love being distracting. ;)

DK xo

At 13:57, Blogger Minka said...

dewy, nope not Marie Antionette. But we just started...so it might still become clear to you!

At 14:02, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I never know these so I'm going to sit on the bench with Squaregirl and make obscene comments about the carrots because, well, I can.

At 14:08, Blogger Ariel the Thief said...

well, if I was a carrot mom, I would not want my daughter dress like that. but who listens to their mom today...

At 14:08, Blogger Minka said...

Jenna, and I am sure it will be steamy...´cause there are only a few in the bloggoverse known to me...that can turn words into ovens like you do :) *hands out some tea and biscuits*

At 14:21, Blogger cube said...

I thought the "horse" story was apocryphal?

At least the carrots are modest enough to keep their legs crossed with such short skirts!

At 14:51, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I hope I'm not expected to bake these biscuits. I can't cook worth a darn

At 14:56, Blogger Minka said...

cube, I am way to comfortably seated to get up and wrestle with merriam Webster right now :)

brian, you really wanna pul at that threat? *grins*

Jenna, handing them to you mean sthey already have been baked. What else is a mom for? :)

At 16:56, Blogger Logophile said...

At 17:20, Blogger FelineFrisky said...

Well, I'm at a loss - I have a guess from the clues, but am not sure. Shove over Jenna - or maybe I'll just sit on the floor, cream in my tea, please. Biscuit? No, I'm dieting, but thanks. D :)

At 17:29, Blogger Mo'a said...

another brilliant clue, I must quit horsing.....around and get to the computer earlier....all the clever clues are taken by the time I am ready to play.

Minka, Thanks for visiting today. I felt the need to explain why "logical" was stressed in my Lesson Plan today...it went with the picture for a previous post. I have randomly been posting Lesson Plans using each of the Multiple Intelligences. And, YES, I agree with you that intelligence tests are always skewed to just one or two intelligences. This comment has nothing to do with your post today...but I did offer a limerick earlier.

At 18:51, Blogger Minka said...

Brian, all I can offer so far is a quick recovery from all your ailments. Writing helps :) Maybe a couple more chapters of read magic will do it?

Logo, those are the cutest carrots ever :) That is why they are on my site;)

FF, cream in your tea? Cream? WHEN DIETING? *hands her a non-fat non-claorie milk replacement* :)

Móa, don´t encourage him, please. :)

swampwitch, yeah I figured it was something to do with multiple intelligences. And you are welcome to talk about anything, relevant to teh topic or not, over here. It´s not Waking Ambrose after all :)

Hi,
I,m Andrea and after following your blog for about 3/4 year I even dare to blog! But since this is Newcomers Friday ;-)
As far as I remember the first name given to her was Sophie but after watching some inspiring and great musicals like Kiss me Kate, she changed it... or so... LOL :-)
Wishing you a nice weekend,
Andrea

At 20:41, Blogger Minka said...

Brian *makes him some tea, gets a blanket and calls Diane*

Andrea, welcome and this place should frightened you to blog/post or comment. Is there any wya I cna get back to you?!

At 20:43, Blogger Minka said...

oh... I forgot Andrea...your hint was absolutely right. She was born Sophia and she lived in a city in Germany with her family called Zerbst! I went to school there *busy beaming with pride*

At 20:55, Anonymous Anonymous said...

She landed on the throne after a bloodless coup d'état, in which her lame-ass hubby was thrown off -- he died 3 days later after drinking copious amounts of questionable vodka.

she was also a fan of The Enlightenment *and* commissioned a famous statue of the Bronzed Horseman, which stands in St. Petersberg, on the banks of the Neva River (imagine that). she thought of herself as a philosopher. a Great philosopher. the *SECOND* Great female ruler/philosopher.

again, her death had *nothing* to do with unbridled lust and/or horses.

At 21:26, Anonymous Anonymous said...

oups... you frightened me Minka! ;-) should I really be scared? *sneaks away* ;-)
Yeah sure, you can get back to me but... err how? Sorry, I,m a bit new to this thingy but of course we can get in touch :-)
Yup, a great feminist she was with all that double-name and "von" and "zu" (could you image to be called Fräulein Anhalt-Zerbst?) Thank god that empresses or czars stick to simple old Pete or Kate or Wladi or what ever ;-)
Andrea

we had some carrots just like that in our garden this year....except I gave all the little green skirts to the thrift shop so they have to go naked.

having a nice giggle over everyone's clues. Unfortunately, all these GREEEAAATTTSSSS make me think of Tony the Tiger from some cereal I can't remember. I didn't know that miss meow was such a wanton but I guess that't not the kind of thing they like to tell you about in high school. :-)

At 23:09, Blogger Minka said...

neva, enough with the horse already, you are gonna give me nightmares:)

Andrea, not to be scared...I just wante dto kno wif you had a website/blog that I oculd come and visit :)

What's this about cookies?

At 11:32, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No, I,m sorry no website/blog so far... but I,m really *thinking* of creating one, put some nice pics of legs... errr... flippers... on it, or exposing some other body parts and getting a 30000 hits of visitors a day ;-) But speaking of that: how are you doing? still visiting the nice icelandic doc? Am I guessing right he was/is an integral part of your fabulous recovery? *wink, wink*
Bye to all, must hurry to do my saturday market shopping!
Andrea

Jenna, yes they are as long as they know their place in our lifes:)

Miz B. It is always about coookies one way or another;)

Andrea, I have seen him actually twice again...this is Reykjavik after all. Apart from his eyes, not that tempting :)

Brian, those are some delicious cookies, You are a lucky guy!

At 22:38, Anonymous Anonymous said...

when you say "nightmares", you're not making a bad pun, are you? no, of course not!

that said, i agree... and am personally much more interested in your mystery ruler's past. i believe she wasn't just Great, she was incredibly large at the time of her death. and by incredibly large i mean HUMONGOUS. so, you see, her name not only reflects a greatness by historical standards (for she truly was) but also in a physical sense (apparently she never met a bliny or pirozhky she didn't like).

by the way, a contemporary actress with the *same* first name (who won an Oscar for her role in the movie Chicago) played this Empress in a film made in 1995. xox

At 02:28, Blogger S said...

Um, Im the carrot on the left! LOL
I know I'm really late, I had some guesses,
and wasnt quite sure till the MEOW hint...that did it for sure....

At 12:19, Blogger Minka said...

Brian, I don´t know how that works...but Reykjavik is just a plane fligth away:)

neva, well done...you truly deserved your crown today and yesterday. Wonderful hinting all around.

Barefoot mistress, the one on the left? It seem to have a lot of Vitamin E, well done!

At 13:13, Blogger Doug The Una said...

Night-mares, har har, Minka.

Neva, are you trying to add trivia to trivia?

At 13:18, Blogger Minka said...

Doug...I wasn´t sure anyone would get that pun...I should have known better :)

At 20:40, Blogger The amoeba said...

Minka, what is it with that brazen one in the middle, wearing nothing more than a fig leaf? You shouldn't be doing this kind of thing to garden statues.

I'll pass on the hinting. All the good ones are taken for this german-import imperial kitty.

Oh, there was a Serbian Rock band that took their name from her, Ekatarina Velika, they were around from 1982 to 1994 I believe.
