What's done is done!
We didn't win the World Championship. To be fair, nobody expected Germany to even get out of its group, but somewhere along the way we got caught up in a belief, a possibility...the sheer exceptional.
Sometimes we were lucky, mostly we fought hard and we actually thought we could go all the way. Tuesday evening, myself and I expect almost the entire nation sat crying infront of the TV.
Those weren't angry tears. I have never seen Germans accept defeat this graciously. Everybody loved the game and no Italians seem to have been injured after realization kicked in:)
This was so much more than just a game, it was about Germany being united, a sense of pride in being German I haven't seen before. Flags were everywhere. For once, Germany put history behind and sang loud and clear "Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit" without feeling ashamed. A wonderful feeling.
Everybody seems to have caught this glimpse of a future and together we stood. And so we will continue. Tomorrow Germany is gonna play Portugal for the Third place. We might win or lose, but on Sunday the National team will party with the rest of the nation in Berlin and people ... I'll be there.
Lang lebe Deutschland!

Hi Minka-enjoy the party!
Just dropping by to say, hi. Enjoy the party. And I like how you described the German mood/sentiment both before and after.
Isn't it amazing what a sports contest can mean. Wonderful that you're going to Berlin for the party. Viel spaß, einigkeit, recht und freiheit. I think those words must mean a lot especially to you. Und andere zeit, güte reise.
Great to hear from you! Okay, now I understand why the World Cup is such a big deal. What a wonderful thing to experience. Enjoy the party.
Hugs and kisses, Minka.
Best of luck on the third and I am SOOO happy you could be there for this time. How fun for you.
Enjoy!
how wonderful it'd be if we Hungarians were so proud of our nation as you Germans are... never stop singing your songs!
I expect the bronze match to be better than the final, so far the real good games of the Cup were where the German team played. (except that Portugal-Netherland match.)
Oh Minka, we miss you tons! Party away! It is always fun to see the team you're rooting for go far! It was also fun for me to root for Germany!
How very cool that you will be there to have a great time partying! Hooray!
I'm glad you felt a sense of national pride and that even in a loss, you felt united as a country in good feelings.
Party on, Minka!!!
Germany 3:1. Congratulations. If I hear Berlin burnt, I'll know who to ask what happened.
congrats to Germany! after the game when the cameras kept showing Kahn, our commentator said, 'But really, Kahn could smile every once in a while.' (once he was asked why didn't he look happier at such times. he said, he was not an actor.)
Wow. I can say nothing more.
I am in Berlin at the moment and I caught a glimpse of 14 of our national players, two I almost touched. We are partying and Berlin is so awesome today.
A huge plus point is: they have internet cafes all over the place, some are even open 24 hours :)
I woke up at around 4 in the morning to catch a train to Berlin and be amongst all those crazy soccer fans. The chance of a life-time. When will the next World Cup be in Germany or in Europe for that matter? It will be a long time.
This was an experience of a lifetime and I am so glad I could be part of it.
Some people are just lucky I guess :)
Now I have to catch a train back to Mönchengladbach, after all I am pretending to visit my sister;)
France/Italy tonight.
Boy, i can hardly say which team I hate more. But I want france to win, cause Zindine Zidane will be playing his last international game as captain of teh French team. He is a fantastic player and deserves to go when at the top...
I go the other way with it. With no teams left I have an feeling for, I declare yesterday the final. Well done, Deutschland!
Much appreciated :)
I am sure the FIFA will have no problem, with a blogging bard form California to re-write rules of soccer practices on an international level :)
I for one support your idea...wnat me to start a list?
Sure, how many signatures do we need?
Just 1
Mine!
:)
conceited, ey?!
It depends. Do you have someone to do your signature for you?
LOL... sounds like you had a good time... and on Sunday... hope the party is great, as well! :)
late to this party, too (it's been my life this week, i think)... still, as long as you're happy and having a wonderful time, and coming close to touching beloved players (can't believe they didn't try to touch ya back) then i'm happy! i agree with doug, now that Germany's done (and "well" done, at that!) who cares about the finals? not me, that's for sure!
hope you continue to have a fabulous time, dear Minka. stay safe, and try not to break too many hearts in the Deutschland! xoxo
GO ITALY!!! I was rooting for them, not for penalty shots, though, I was over 3 heart attacks by the 4th shot, man, I really hate them. but I'm very happy that Italy won. Zidane didn't surprise me, he's not the type that gives you warning before heading your chest. I'm REALLY curious to know what Materazzi said him...
Not sure what I'm doing here. Howdy, everyone.
Italy won...glad I didn't place any bets!! :)
Sad final for Zidane :( He was thrown off the field and that was a louzy foul, even for a French guy!
Some big guys said their farewells to soccer this World Cup!
Figo, Zidane and Kahn---thank you guys for extraordinary futbol:)
Wait 'til next year!
Hello Minka, Are you still in Germany? I forgot whether I wanted Italy or France win....so I am happy in my ignorance :) In any case I am going to Italy next year.
one of the few things i actually saw of the finals was that Zidane foul. what was up with that? seemed like a pretty foul note to end his career on.
still... *you* had a fabulous time... in that fabulous stadium, watching those fabulous players, and ya got to go to those fabulous parties, so all was not lost, right? (and your team came in third, which was fabulous, too!)
i hope you continue to have a glorious time, sweet Minka... and will have all kinds of wonderful stories to tell us once you get back home!
xoxo
Well, at least you guys took third place. Congrats.
Italy has a tough team; they may be the favorite to win it all next year.
now that I am over the excitement, my disappointment that this final was decided with penalty shots is bigger. not the type of victory you root for. oh well.
Deutschland did pretty well, really. It was a great World Cup... Germany was a great host.
Vittoria Italia! Yay!
