Let the Games Begin!!!

Football World Championship 2006.

I´ll be such a bad blogger buddy in the next weeks :)
This is what it is about. 32 Nations competing in a sport that has everything.

It is the 9th of June and with it comes the World Championship in Football (soccer) 2006. And accordingly my mood will slightly depend on the outcome of quite a few games. See I grew up in Germany and quickly got into the habit of better picking a team or be laughed at on the playground. See kids in Germany don´t necessarily get teased because of their clothes, but more about which team they support. Many a nasty song has been invented for other teams, many little papers of insults have crossed under school tables and so forth. I slightly lost track of football in the last couple of years, but it will always come and get you back, once you got sucked into it and started to comprehended complicated rules of off-site and Italian wining. (sorry Lisa!)

I am ready to devote the next month to this phenomenon.
Germany against Costa Rica is playing right now. Intermission and I am blogging. I really need some help. Germany is up 2:1. *little wave in celebration of my nation*

I fully expect to gain quite a few kilos in the next month, I am prepared to make that sacrifice…although I made a pact with myself: before every important match, I´ll be running like crazy outside. Fair trade!

I know that most of you are baffled about this sport: I found a lovely article in the Seattle Times, that might enlighten you, if you care:

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/soccer/2003046768_cupoverview08.html

And ladies, oh my god there is so much eye-candy running around on those beautifully shaped legs. Michael Ballack, I feel you!

“From Friday until July 9, the globe will spin according to the rhythms of that ball. Teams from 32 qualifying nations will kick it in a dozen German cities for the singular honor of hoisting a cup. The trophy stands 14 inches tall, weighs 14 pounds and is made of 18-karat gold. The real measure of its heft, though, can be found in the scene it depicts: two human figures holding up the Earth.

At least a third of the planet will tune in at some point, making the Super Bowl — what Americans still stubbornly call "football" — seem like a pre-party. Everywhere but at taverns and cafes in practically every place but the United States, business will get done only when broadcast schedules allow.”

congrats to Germany! (opening matches are usually not very good but this one was exciting. I missed Kahn, though. the Costa Rican goal keeper was very good. it'd have easily been 6:2 or 7:2...)

Thank you! 4:2 Wow. I liked the look of the German team....they were very confident and solid throughout the game. I am a little worried about our defense though. It held ok against Costa Rica, but it can´t stop Brazil!
But...a wonderful beginning, many screams and a few minor heart attachs later...I am totally into it. There is another game in half an hour :)

We have the world cup wall here at work...well partial wall, the flags of the countries different fans support, the losers get taken down.

And I never blamne the germans...I am half German myself

great post! spoken like a *true* fan! and, since joel and i are not really "in" to the game (tho' we do watch the finals sometimes) we'll rootrootroot for YOUR team! (i'm part german... so it does seem fitting!)

happy cheering! : D

don't pay too much attention to those American's...their all pretty foolish :P

That sounds like so much fun Minka! It makes me wish I was there with you rooting for whatever team you decided for us to root for!!

At 19:39, Blogger Alana said...

Ohhh, hooray! The team we were rooting for won! Would you mind doing a play by play for the next game us all so we can enjoy it online with ya? ;)

Sounds wonderful. While I'm not much for watching sports [Sometimes, I don't even watch the Super Bowl here in the USA], I always thought your "football" was much more interesting than "football" here in the States.

puppytoes, it only seems right :) (and also cheer a little for Brazil, and we all hate England-not the country, just the team! and Italy-darn those throw-me-on-the-floor-and-cry-seven-mamma-mias sissies!) That shoudl sum up pretty much where I satnd :)

squaregirl, I so would love to do that, although I hardly think i am qualified. There is an Icelandic commentator here and I am always worried he is gonna suffer a heart-attach each game.:) Good rooting, Squargirl!

I only wish blogger would let me publish pictures. I need visual aids to bring teh spirit across!

Tim, do you realize you could be thrown out of your country for that? :) But to me, it means the world! Thank you!

SOCCER...aka Football (European style)RULES!!!!!!!

(disclaimer) the truth is I personally don't really feel that way...don't quite share our wonderful host's passion for the sport but I feel I owe her such a proclamation after dissing the World Cup on my own site. Let me just say that I am sure my lack of interest in the sport of "soccer" has nothing to do with the game itself but my own personal lack of athletic sophistication. Oh I guess you could blame my baby boomer upbringing that saw me exposed to just the big three American favorites - baseball, basketball, and football (American version)...soccer wasn't yet a big part of the American sports landscape...but I'll take full responsibility and pledge to watch at least a few minutes of World Cup "action" here and there and make every attempt to become a fan of the sport. It's the least I can do.

Joel, apology accepted. Don´t you feel so much better now? :) At the moment, it still doesnæt matter as much, but you definatly should tune in at the end of June and beginning of JUly, when the good teams play against each other. It was a good effort!

Jenna, see I knew you´d get it on the first go!

Sounds good. Let me know when it's over.

Hey, did someone say Marburg? Are there hackers at Phillips Universität?

At 11:59, Blogger Ariel the Thief said...

Monika, the German's offside tactics have led into their taking in two goals in one match, knowing your people I am sure they're gonna take care about it and not make the same mistakes again.

At 14:56, Blogger Minka said...

actonbell, thank you and if you catch a few minutes of it...let me know how you feel about it :)

Doug, July 9th!

Ariel, I just saw England palying. Let´s just say I have new hopes for my German team!

At 15:37, Blogger Ariel the Thief said...

the E-P game reminded me I wanted to tell you what a pleasure it was to see a match so fair like the German-Costa Rica one was.

anyways, the E-P match should be played again IMO 'cause Paraquay got lost in the very first minute, really, this team was not they! and normally they don't kick goals for England...

Minka...did you say I should watch towards the end of June or beginning of July? Guess that means I must endure beyond this weekend, eh? Wow, didn't remember this World Cup thingee lasted quite soooooooooooooooo long. Oh well, just more of an opportunity to become a fan, right?

At 17:49, Blogger Alana said...

hey! last night my guy came over and turned on the game you were talking about (which only aired here in Spanish, which I don't speak). I said, "Oh, I know the outcome" and he tells me, "yeah, Germany". He teaches High School and apparently all of his students are waaaay into this. I had no idea...I'm so square!

At 18:02, Blogger Sar said...

Soccer! I played for many years. But I can't bend it like Beckham. Now there's eye candy, Minka. You gotta love a guy that can be a manly sportsman by day, then a metro man by night. ;)

At 18:25, Blogger Ariel the Thief said...

what an exciting second half of Trinidad Tobago - Sweden!!! the most exciting game with no goals I've seen for a long while! talking of manly sportman, isn't Mellberg the Viking one? :)

At 18:39, Blogger Minka said...

ariel, what a game and what a surprise. I so expected Sweden to take this one home. But a draw? Trinidad /tobago were actually quite surprising. I was impressed...didnæt see the entire game though. Am at work :(
But in a little while Argentina will kick off...that will be so interesting to see!

Squaregirl, I love your squareness...it makes you you!

Sar, I played too...not particularly well though:) Wait until you see Michael Ballack. Mother may I? *sighs*

Joel, I have high hopes for you!

when no way I could avoid to play soccer (in shcool), I at least tried to get away from the ball...

At 21:26, Blogger Miz BoheMia said...

I do love me those soccer bodies! YUMMY! Loverboy has socces legs and a soccer... um... behind. Shhhh! Biteable indeed!

I do love me the eye candy and though I have a hard time with it because of my mix (I mean who the HELL do I root for????) Spain and Denmark are it for me... unfortunately Germany and England are our sworn enemies! ENEMIES I SAY (in the football realm) so I see we shall be having quite some battles! Although France is also to be hated! HATED! But I am so not gonna hold my breath for Spain... They always without a doubt screw up in all the important games! And I don't know what on earth Barca did with their Portuguese goal keeper! I am not happy about that! ;-) I get used to a good view you see! Just sayin!!!

At 22:19, Blogger Minka said...

ariel, I am sure you were well liked for it :)

Miz.B, we shall be enemies for a month then. Loving ones though :)
See...once upon a time Monika´s heart belonged to FC Barcelona and Rivaldo. Boy oh boy. But Spain is not goign very far I believe and I do hate teh French Football team...so we can do that together. Iceland always roots for any of the Nordic countries...so Danmark has my support as well :) See not that bad after all!

At 01:23, Blogger Kyahgirl said...

ok you're off the hook for the next month. I'll cheer for whoever you want Monika. Yay germany.

:-)

I'd be all cheered to see Netherland playing today but I'm a little sad how many of the old big ones is not in the team anymore, and I'm SHOCKED that Patrick Kluivert is so ignored he's not even in the 23. other than I love his beautiful, animal-like gracefullness, he's one genius forward, Mr. Van "Pain In The A§§" Basten...

At 13:06, Blogger Miz BoheMia said...

But see, being Scandinavian I can NEVER root for Sweden nor Norway and neither for Finland because well, they aren't Scandinavian... Iceland fo' sho' because I have Icelandic blood and so well... hmph! Denmark didn't make it so now WHAT DO IT DO????

I am doomed to lose in this one but alas, I must still oppose Germany oh sistah o' mine!

Serbia and Holland are on now... hmmm.... I have yet to see who I am rooting for! Well, in all honesty Loverboy is watching.. I am quite happy with knowing the score...

I know, I know... a disgrace but there you have it!

At 13:44, Blogger Fred said...

When I lived in the U.K., Arsenal was my team, and I even went to a few games. So, I'll interested in the Cup, and will be watching as much as I can.

Enjoy the games!

At 13:57, Blogger Ariel the Thief said...

Serbia and Montenegro - Netherland is not too exciting so far. the "new" Netherland team is great. that Robben guy is fast like hell.

At 14:09, Blogger Minka said...

You guys....so interested in soccer. I am so proud of you!

yeah...I actually like the Holland team very much as well. Robben, go! But so far...not a very -sit-on-the-edge-of-the-chair-and-pull-yor-hair game!

At 14:43, Blogger Doug The Una said...

Miz B, can you explain how Sweden, Norway and Finland aren't Scandinavian? I'm terribly confused and try to seem smart.

Oh, and, Hey, Minka!

At 14:47, Blogger Miz BoheMia said...

Sweden and Norway are... the Finnish aren't... that's what I meant...

And being Danish I cannot root for the Norwegians nor the Swedes well, because they are our adversaries and I cannot root for Finland well, because they aren't Scandinavian!

I hope that helps! Alas, bohemians confuse others via the lack of proper distinction whereas curmudgeons who prattle confuse bohemians via sheer intellect! *sobs* SO unfair!

And yeah, HOLA MINKA!!!

At 14:50, Blogger Miz BoheMia said...

Oh... ok... today I will actually root for Holland but only because a Serb was once quite racist and hurtful towards a Slovenian friend of mine whom I loved dearly and lost through my many moves and perhaps to leukemia... I will never know because I have been unable to track her down... so down with Serbia...

See? I just do not follow a rational enough path to really join in although for what it's worth I will try to confuse and annoy along the way with my many anecdotal reasons detailing why I support a certain team! ;-P

Ok... I must run away because my son stinks and it is the Loverboy's turn to change him and he is lazy and I am NOT changing him this time! HELL TO THE NO! Ok, ok, off I go...

At 15:19, Blogger Minka said...

I am thinking of putting a little chatbox in my sidebar...so we can chat while the World Cup is on!
Seems like a lot of people need to vent :) It is such an exciting sport!

oh...Hi Doug!

Ariel,

Miz B. your reasoning seems perfectly comprehensible in a bohemian way of course :)

At 17:54, Blogger Alana said...

I've been told that I will be rooting for Mexico when they play Iran (if my memory is correct?). Don't tell me if you know who won that one already...

Viva La Mexico!

At 19:35, Blogger Miz BoheMia said...

DOWN WITH MEXICO! DOWN!!!

DAMN BASTARDS!

At 19:51, Blogger Alana said...

Oh Mexico won, hooray!

Oh, I'm sorry about that Miss B. My honey's Mexican so if I have to take sides on a soccer field it's gonna be with Mexico.

At 20:33, Blogger Miz BoheMia said...

*sigh* It's Ok! I am part Iranian and my honey is a full blooded one so...

At 21:00, Blogger Ariel the Thief said...

the Iranian team was amazingly lost on the field. but who knew there are so good looking men in Iran?

I won't be at home tomorrow to see America but can hardly wait to see Brazil on Thuesday!

Miz B. Iranians sure are handsome. Yummy!

Ariel, I was very surprised to see such a good game from Angola. They were really good. Portugal was almost lucky to have scored that quickly!

Miz B's explanations of nationality just cracked me up. You should part of the UN girl!
