I am back!

Yes it is true. *sigh* I realize that some of you had a hard time and missed me quite a lot but there is no need to go demanding posts when one is simply not in the vicinity of a computer *points finger in direction of Doug*. There has been talk about shutting blogger down altogether, but I convinced them otherwise;). So, for those of you who had trouble yesterday publishing or commenting, I do apologize for the inconvenience.

I took part in a yearly horse-trip in the south of Iceland. It is a journey where all the women of the area get together, saddle up their horses and go off to wherever a sunny spot might allow excessive drinking. It is a fun way to get to know new people and brave the Icelandic weather. I believe at one point I was screaming out loud: "Is this all you can do?!" to the weather gods at large. They cared very little, but I felt better.

We rode quite a long time. The weather, as always, had a mind of its own. It was very cold, but not raining. Someone had the ingenious idea of booking dinner for all of us in an area in the middle of nowhere. We had to leave the horses behind and walk for some distance. Now, people that have enjoyed quite a bit of lubrication on the way, look better on horseback than they do walking...do I need to say more? Then there was dancing and singing...and I am stretching the meaning of those words very far! In the picture you can see guy-who-is-available (I am not allowed to give names) bringing the house down with those 100 year old Icelandic country songs.
"Ridum, ridum...ridum yfir sandi..." Good times!

With the knowledge that my mom will be reading this, I am glad to announce that I got safely home, at a decent time in very good shape. Someone send me a pic this morning, depicting me and my bare behind on that trip-a girl´s gotta pee!- but since afore-mentioned woman will be reading this blog...I am not at liberty to publish pictures with questionable content.
My Queendom for a good horse! It is great to know that you have a great horse under you, which despite your inability to give sensible commands, will nevertheless get you home safely. Mela, I´ll brush you really well next time I see you!

Now that I am typing this, I am back in the urban area of Reykjavik and I have quite a high temperature and a sore throat to show for this trip. Can´t wait until next year.

Yay! I'm first. The one and only time!!

I want to see a better picture of 'guy-who-is-available'! Just keeping an eye on you miss.

man, there sure were a lot of shiny blonde heads in that room. Don't see that so much here (unless its fake blonde).

Glad you're back safely and that you had a good horse under you. That's important on these adventures :-)

The thunder of a hundred hooves as a detachment of drunken valkyries storm across the stony flatlands. Wagner or did I dream it?

Wha an adventure! I gott get myself over to Iceland and join in! Glad you enjoyed your experience and get better soon!!! (I highly recommend a concoction of honey, water, apple cider vinegar and cayenne pepper!)

kyahgirl, I am sure there will come another time when you´ll be first! Doug gets sick too, you know! :)
Can´t get you another "guy-who-is-available pic" I tried to stay out of his hunting grounds;)

Brian, it is a roller coaster, we just have to ride it. And I enjoy being in the same carriage with you!

Doug, you are thinking of "Die Valkuerennacht" I think we might have exceeded Wagner´s imagination on this trip:)

Miz B. I might try that (or better said: let mom brew it together!) can I leave the cayenne pepper out of the concoction?

Sounds like you had a blast.Don't think i would have lasted such great distances on horse back, but your horse also looks hoofed and as tired as you were in that pic.

Nooo! Cayenne pepper is the germ killah!

Ok, here goes:

1/2 cup water
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
1/2 teaspoon (or more) cayenne pepper (a little sting is good)
honey to taste

It is actually pretty good and oh so caliente!

Feel better sweet sistah o' mine!

I'll never take a trip in Iceland without good whisky under my coat! (just picture what'd have happened to the opera if Wagner lets those valkyrie women drink...)

I love how you know me so well and to think we have yet to meet in the flesh! Yes, I am trying to get back to my early morning yoga so that I can have a life during the day (an exhausting one but that is ok!)...

Have a good weekend my sweet Monika! Boho besos coming your way!

Wow! Count me in next year. Oh, I get it, it's only for women. I am all smiles.

Hmmm, I wouldn't endanger your life by being there. Violence follows me, even when I don't solicite it.

Here I am so late....you are feeling better I hear. Nasty cold go away.
When I was little I practially lived on a horse. Our little Icelandic horses are so gentle and kind.....ofcourse there is always an exception, like the one that I was on the last time I was in Iceland....he thought that going bacwards was a good laugh on me. I had a very hard time then as my knees were so bad. I won't say more because I feel a blog idea coming on :)
Ridum og ridum og rekum yfir sandinn.....love that song.

At 13:17, Blogger Minka said...

ariel, We always think of teh drink. A lovely sip of brennivin will do wonders for the cold :)

Miz B. well, you had a comment up by 5.10 and I thought...she probably just woke up and is prearing for yoga. That-and not the peephole I made in the time-space continium- allow me to deduct certain patterns.
uhhh...Loverboy is brewing some tea in the kitchen, go and get some;)

Ben, women are only allowed during the ride, at the afterparty we want men to be present too:)

Karma, let´s celebrate:)

Móa, I bet it is a good story, although slightly scary. I once fell from a horse here in my 9 years-I didn´t hurt myself at all and cllimbed right back up again. But those moments are a little scary!
And another one for you
"Oh, Maria mig langar heim...oh Maria mig langar heim, thvi heima vil eg helst vera...oh, Maria hja ther!" And everybody now!

Looks like fun. Welcome back and thanks for the great pictures.

It would take some hearty liquor to toughen me up enough for that horseback journey in ice cold weather.
My fingers feel frostbitten at the very thought.
Sounds like a fun time! Hope your sore throat gets better quickly.
Nice photo of you and your horsie.

At 13:11, Blogger Minka said...

Fred and Jamie, fun it was. And you are welcome...there are some more pics...mostly with liquor-bottles:) But mom reads this blog every day!

If I were Beavis & Butthead I would comment *heh heh snicker* she said "people that have enjoyed quite a bit of lubrication on the way, look better on horseback than they do walking". ;) But since I'm not, I'll just say I'm glad to hear you're feeling better. Oh and in your horse picture, you appear to have no arms. Where'd they go?! :)

At 18:22, Blogger Minka said...

sar, I have traded them for sufficient lubrication;)or they are hiding the vodka beneath my coat:) No, if you look closely, you´ll see my fingers beneath the horses neck, and the other holds the -gosh-I-don´t-know-the-English-word-for-it Zuegel (the two lines that come from the horses mouth) and are under my belly, to keep the horse steady!)

You are one girl who knows how to have a fabulous time. I LOVE it! I wonder if Icelandic horses are much different to ride than my beloved Misty (black and white pinto quarterhorse) of old. I'll have to try it this trip.

Ha ha - hope you don't get blackmailed with the photo of the arse :-D

At 00:33, Blogger Minka said...

no, they wouldn´t dare! I have much worse photos to counter attack and I will use it!
Yes, you definately should try when you get here. They are lovely creatures and if you can ride it will be so much fun. How long are you staying for?

We arrive just in time for a family reunion on June 23 - staying through July 8. First week will be with Bjarni's family - his Mom will travel with us to Isafjordur area where her grandfather had a farm, and up Grimsey way. I want to see puffins :-) Latter part of the trip will be spent... hmmm maybe checking out the big damn (oops dam) project in eastern Island... we don't know.
