The Moment is Upon us...

No, I am not gonna predict the end of the world, but rather a wonderful thing happening in Iceland. We are about to be 300.000 people on this island in a few days. It doesn´t sound as much, but if you know many of them and you have to greet them everytime you see them in one of the two shopping malls, this number appears much bigger:) The countdown is on and you can check it daily on www.hagstofa.is. I checked a couple of moments ago and this was the status:

Day:
28.12.2005
Time:
12:45

Population:
299.828
there are only 172 people missing to make up the 300.000.

You have to realize that:
a) every two hours a baby is born in Iceland
b) there are about 5 people dying every day
c) we reached the 200.000 mark in 1966/67

ergo= I predict the middle of January to reach a population of 300.000.

Just for fun I checked the names in our National Register and there are currently 77 Monikas living in Iceland. There is no Doug. TLP..you are 8 times and 3 times as a second name. The rest of you, I just don´t really know your real names:)

What a mathematical post.

I nominate sending Doug as American Blog Ambassador to Iceland. This way you're one human closer to your target goal and you can add Doug to the list of names, Monika!

Who seconds the nomination?

I'm second, so I'll second.
There are 8 Tan Lucy Pez's in Iceland? Unbelievable! I didn't think it was that common a name.

I sure second this motion. If this is not a unanimous vote, I´ll be darned! I have political influences you know...there is someone that Iknow that knows somebody;)
Sar, there are 25 of you here and 3 have you as their second name. Your name actually is a favourite of mine ;)

manchego, yes...I thought Hafdís Tan Lucy Pez Siguðardóttir is a weird combination of a name as well :) But what can you do?

At 15:04, Blogger Fred said...

What, no Freds? It seems like it would be such a common name in Iceland. :)

At 16:13, Blogger Minka said...

Fred, there actually is one Fred and another has Fred as a second name. It is just poor Doug that doesn´t seem to have a namessake here:)

how about a Dan?

At 18:03, Blogger Fred said...

Only one? That's it - I need to move to Iceland.

Wait a minute? There are no Dougs but 8 TLPs?

I humbly accept the nomination.

At 18:35, Blogger Minka said...

Dan, I think you hit the jackpot. There are 8 Dans in Iceland and 139 that carry Dan as their middle name. You win :)And thank you for visiting my blog.
Fred, maybe you can come as Doug´s assitant. With him being a dog and all it would probably be easier to settle down here if the two of you unite :)

Sarah, 25 Sarahs, and 4 have it as their middle name:) I am not surprised :)

As far as your political influence, Monika, doesn't everyone get to sit on the Althing every third year or so?

At 22:54, Blogger Minka said...

Doug, I wouldn´t know really. We are that few, that this number could be right. Many people I know have been in Althingi at one time or another. It won´t be any problem to smuggle you in there :) It is so nice that you are finally coming to the country, I´ll prepare some delicious Icelandic feast to welcome you probably. How about sheep head?

Sounds like a perfect virtual meal, Monika.

Yay babies! Don't send them over to my house though!

I bet they don't have many Miz BoheMias! Ha, ha, ha, haaaa!

At 08:48, Blogger Minka said...

Mom, it is the population number, not the number of pure Icelandic decent...Are you calling me a mugblood?
Móa...I can´t find neither of your names in our register. I guess you are pretty special.
Miz Bohemia...I would send no Icelandic babies to meet you in-laws in your presently over-crowded home. I think you have enough on your hand as it is:)

Keith, my last name is the german version of your former last name:)
I guess we are name buddies.
Dogs and cats are allowed and let me tell you they are all over down-town Reykjavik. Don´t kno where you heard that, but it isn´t true. Some apartment buildings do not allow you to have dogs or cats as pets, but if you have your own place you can fill it with as many as you like:)
Iceland is actually a haven for animals. There are very few illnesses and common diseases abroad have not catched on here, because the import of animals is very strict and animals that are actually brought to the country(for a very high prize of course!) have to stay in quarantine for a very long time. I had to leave my dog in Germany when I moved here 8 years ago. Didn´t have the money, nor the heart to put him somewhere for three months. My siblings took him and he s doing fine. I miss him loads and I can´t bring myself to get a new dog here! I feel like I would be cheating on him...
What a long answer, sorry about that. I got carried away:)

My sister in law and her husband were stationed there last year. He was in the military and she was a student at a college there in Iceland. They enjoyed it. Now they live back in the USA in Virginia.

At 15:03, Blogger Minka said...

Lucy Stern, Welcome to my blog...I have seen you around at the pezes and I believe Sar´s as well. Thank you for visiting.

At 18:32, Blogger Sar said...

Okay, so it's unanimous. I say we through one helluva send off for Doug (but I'm sneaking on board and coming with - Monika, you have room for me?).

At 20:58, Blogger Miz BoheMia said...

Count me in Sar!

Monika, what about my real name (shhhh!) any of me over in Iceland?

At 23:16, Blogger Minka said...

Sar and Miz...both of you are welcome whenever the fancy takes you. You know I wouldn´t kick you out of my bed ;)
Miz, your name is twice represented here and once as a second name. I truly believe there are a chosen few that can pull of this name with as much grace and dignity as it demands. You being one of the few :)
