Bobby coming to Iceland?

Location: Yugoslavia (then S0viet Union). The year is 1992 and a big chess game is about to start. Bobby Fischer against Boris Spassky. The rematch. Fischer wins. A proud moment indeed. However, Us authorities decide to prosecute the ouspoken American for travelling to that country. They have been trying to get a hold on him for a decade. Presently he dwells in Japan and has so for the last three years. Unfourtunately Japan shares an extradition (I believe is the word) treaty with the US, so they basically have to hand him over to the proper authorities. Fischer is over 60 and facing a jail sentence up to ten years. Now... Iceland has offered him to come and stay here.
Now we have to know that he came in 1972 to Iceland where he beat Mr. Spassky. The match got to referred to as the "Match of the Century". Naturally we are very proud! And I believe we share no extradition treaty with the US. How do you guys feel about this?

Well I for one am very proud of my people for stepping up to the political plate so to speak! And what purpose does it serve to extradite a 60 year old back to the States to go to jail for playing a game years ago in a "then-enemy" country... one of the good things about sports is that it breaks down political barriers, is it not? The Olympics is a fine example of this where nations from all over the world put differences aside and just get on with the game already. Surely the Americans have better things to do than jailing a Chess player.

Being critical of America is one thing ,we all can do that shit ! It's easy too pick on a country that friggin' rules the planet ! But, you folks up there in the homeland just keep lettin' all those damned Muslim, extremests in.. yeah, that's it... take all you want, it's only a matter of time before you'll all be up in arms and morning for your precious loved ones, that these God forsaken lunatics will be killing with there bombs and insanity ! Europe is starting to realize there mistake, when freedom and sanctuary starts to impeed on the freedom and saftey of others , you've got to draw the line somewhere! Go ahead and enjoy your pride for now, I assure you it will be short lived!

The spirit and ideals that created America and made it great have been steadily eroding over this past century. Others more eloquent than myself have expressed my own opinions in superior fashion, which I will quote here:

* A free society is one where it is safe to be unpopular. (Adlai Stevenson)

* They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

* Let America realize that self-scrutiny is not treason. Self-examination is not disloyalty. (Richard Cardinal Cushing)

* Our government...teaches the whole people by its example. If the government becomes the lawbreaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy. (Justice Louis Dembitz Brandeis)

* It is the duty of the patriot to protect his country from its government. (Thomas Paine)

Johnny...I am not frigging complaining about America´s intention to stop terrorists or other weirdoes that plan to hurt people in any way. Nor am I aware that Iceland has a policy of letting dangerous people come here. I was simply stating that an old guy, who played chess somewhere over a decade ago does not demand such an extreme punishment...that is old. I am by no way comparing Bobby Fischer with the extremists that attacked the Twin Towers!

God bless America! First of all I would like to say that this whole idea of offering Bobby Fisher is a little silly to me, it smells a little bit of a politician trying to be popular and at the same time shwing us all that he (Davíð Oddsson) is not afraid of the superpower(hehehe) America. This is the man that put Iceland on the list of nations that support the Iraq oil war and he is just a stable boy for George Bush. Bobby Fisher was(yes was) a great chessplayer but I think he has never been a great man. Iceland loves this guy because the match he played here in 1972 made us feel like we meant something in world politics. This chess superstar also made friends with his Icelandic assistant, the delightful Sæmi Rokk, and that made us all feel so important as a nation. This is just a little story about a small nations' size complex. Now, about USA, that apparently rule the planet. Please dont confuse US foreign policy with the war on terrorism, or with sense for that matter. Why is it that Americans cant see Bush's war on terrorism for what it is? A tool for him to stay in power. I am sure that if mr. Jumbo had any sense at all in his brain he will move away from this country of stupidity and fear. For Christs sake, they elected Bush again! Maybe he could move to Iceland and join Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn. I'm sure they would taked him in with his trailer, pick-up truck and rabbit gun.

Tryggvi
